Description
Lum's mother is an Oni alien from the planet Oniboshi. She is the queen of the Oni planet and the mother of Lum. Her appearance is youthful and attractive, with short green hair and blue eyes, and she typically wears a tiger-striped dress resembling a cheongsam. She looks similar to her daughter but somewhat older, and her youthful appearance has occasionally caused others to mistake her for a younger woman. She speaks only the Oni language, known as Oniboshigo, which is represented in the manga as Mahjong tiles and in the subtitled anime as Greek lettering; over time she comes to understand other languages, but her speech remains in the Oni tongue. Her personality is regal and assertive. She has a strong will and is not afraid to assert her authority, as seen when she engages in a conflict of pride with Mendo's mother. She is also shown to have a playful and slightly mischievous side, for instance when she hugs Mendo during a school visit, leading to a misunderstanding. Her relationship with her daughter Lum is warm and affectionate; Lum calls her kaachan. She is also married to Lum's father, whom she appears to dominate in a gentle manner, as she is shown to be the one who wears the pants in the family. Her role in the story primarily involves supporting her daughter from a distance. She appears on Earth on special occasions, such as Parents' Day at Tomobiki School, where her arrival is dramatic and disruptive. During that visit, she lands her spaceship on top of the ox-drawn carriage carrying Mendo's mother, setting off a comedic confrontation. Her motivations revolve around her family: she cares deeply for Lum and, by extension, becomes involved in the chaotic life her daughter has chosen on Earth. She is protective of her family and willing to use her authority and resources when necessary. Her notable abilities include commanding the Oni planet's space forces, which she can summon at any time. She also possesses the standard Oni traits of flight and electrical discharge generation, though these are not prominently showcased. As a queen, she wields considerable political and military power. Her development is limited, as she is a minor character who appears in only a few episodes and films, but she consistently embodies a dignified yet playful maternal figure who stands ready to support her daughter and assert her status when challenged.
