Description
Kosuke Shirai is a supporting character in the anime series Urusei Yatsura. He is a classmate and the best friend of the protagonist Ataru Moroboshi. Attending Tomobiki High School, he is part of a close group that includes Ataru and another friend, Hokuto. In the original 1981 anime adaptation Kosuke Shirai did not appear, replaced by the original characters known as Lum’s Stormtroopers. He was restored to a more prominent role in the 2022 anime adaptation, which follows the original manga more closely.

Kosuke Shirai is a typical teenage boy who enjoys joining Ataru in mischief and schoolyard trouble. He is somewhat popular with girls, as he has a girlfriend of his own and has been shown receiving Valentine’s Day chocolate. Like many male students, he harbors a crush on the alien Lum and often tries to prevent her from kissing Ataru, believing he is protecting her purity. He is generally good‑natured, loyal to his friends, and participates in the chaotic events that surround Ataru.

His primary motivation is to be part of the fun and excitement that follows Ataru, and his infatuation with Lum occasionally leads him to meddle in her relationship with Ataru. In the narrative, Kosuke Shirai functions as a comic side character, reacting to the surreal situations with typical teenage exasperation. He appears frequently in the manga and the 2022 anime, serving as a sounding board for Ataru’s schemes and sharing in the resulting misfortunes.

Kosuke Shirai’s key relationships are with Ataru Moroboshi and Hokuto, with whom he forms a trio of friends who instigate or become entangled in daily mischief. He also has a girlfriend, who once posed as another person to help him. His admiration for Lum is one‑sided and never reciprocated. Over the course of the series, Kosuke Shirai shows little personal development, remaining a consistent supporting presence; in later stories he often becomes an unwilling participant in the escalating chaos rather than an initiator.

Kosuke Shirai possesses no supernatural abilities or exceptional talents. He is a normal human student whose main role is to provide comedic contrast and companionship within the ensemble cast.
