Description
Eiji Ichijō is a central figure in the story, a thirteen-year-old boy who initially appears to be the privileged and perfect son of the wealthy Ichijō family. He has a composed and handsome appearance, with blue eyes and short, dark, wavy hair that notably sets him apart from his blonde-haired brothers. Eiji is a high-achieving student in a prestigious class at school, acting as the class delegate. He carries himself with an air of superiority, looking down on classmates he considers to be of a lower rank and showing little interest in socializing with those outside his elite circle.

Underneath this polished exterior, however, lies a deeply troubled and traumatized individual. Eiji was the middle child of triplets, separated at birth from his biological brothers, Migi and Dali, and raised by Reiko Ichijō as her own son. His entire personality is built on a foundation of repressed guilt stemming from a tragic childhood event. On a Christmas Eve night when he was very young, his biological mother, Metry, appeared at his bedroom window. Frightened, Eiji pushed her, causing her to fall and die. This event, buried deep in his memory, is the source of his profound psychological instability. He lives in constant fear of any perceived imperfection being exposed, a vulnerability that his brothers later exploit to extract a confession from him concerning their mother’s death.

Eiji’s role in the story is that of the primary antagonist for much of the first half, but he ultimately becomes a tragic figure seeking redemption. He is the secret triplet that Migi and Dali never knew they had, turning their revenge mission into a complex family drama. As the plot progresses, seeing a vision of Metry again, staged by the twins, shatters his composure, causing him to regress into a fearful and incontinent state as the buried memory resurfaces. This trauma leads him to become increasingly depressed and selfless. In a pivotal act of atonement, he willingly takes a heavy blow from a falling pumpkin to protect his brother Migi, accepting injury as a way to begin paying for his past sins.

His relationships are almost entirely defined by his family. His relationship with his adoptive mother, Reiko, is one of a perfectionist son trying to please a deeply unstable and controlling mother. After his breakdown, Reiko further infantilizes him, confining him to a re-education room. His dynamic with his biological brothers, Migi and Dali, evolves from rivalry and fear to one of reconciliation. After they rescue him from the burning Ichijō house, Eiji confesses to the authorities that he killed Reiko and committed arson, accepting a sentence to juvenile detention. This act allows him to finally break free from his past and, upon his release, he is able to sit down and share cherry pie with his long-lost brothers, symbolizing their hard-won reunion.

Throughout the narrative, Eiji demonstrates a notable ability for high academic achievement, being at the top of his class. More significantly, his character develops from an arrogant and seemingly perfect boy into a remorseful and self-sacrificing individual who is willing to destroy his own life to atone for the terrible mistake he made as a frightened child.
