Description
Nanao Hibiya is a main character in Reign of the Seven Spellblades. She is a samurai from a warrior family in Tourikueisen, a region in the distant country of Yamatsukuni in the continent of Azia. Her full name is Hibiya Nanao, but she introduces herself using the reversed order Nanao Hibiya to fit the customs of the magic school she attends.
Her background is marked by violence and loss. She fought in the Battle of Akanezaka Toge, where she led only two hundred soldiers against an enemy army of fifty thousand. Despite killing the opposing commander, Soma Yasutsuna, she was overwhelmed and nearly died. She was rescued by Theodore McFarlane, a passing mage who recognized her swordsmanship talent, and was brought to Kimberly Magic Academy to study as a foreign student.
Nanao is friendly, cheerful, and straightforward in manner. She values honor highly and regards a good fight as something to be celebrated. She is deeply polite and does not hesitate to approach strangers with an open and sincere attitude. However, her past experience on the battlefield has left her with a complicated relationship with her own life. For some time after arriving at the academy, she carries a subconscious desire to find a meaningful death, seeking a worthy opponent for a mutual kill, an idea rooted in her family's teaching that revenge is not joyful but a fight between equals called shiawase can be. This tendency makes her reckless in battle, willing to risk her life without hesitation.
Her role in the story is that of a core friend and ally to protagonist Oliver Horn. She is one of six new students who form a close group during their first year at the dangerous academy. Her straightforward and emotional perspective often contrasts with Oliver's calculated and secretive nature, creating a balanced dynamic. She is fiercely loyal and quick to act in defense of others, as seen when she intervenes to protect Katie Aalto from a rampaging troll on the first day of school.
Key relationships include her bond with Oliver Horn, whom she initially views as the ideal opponent for a death match due to his skill with a blade. When Oliver refuses, she feels rejected and adrift, but her friends help her reconsider her purpose. With their support, she resolves to find a new reason to live beyond dying in battle. Her relationships with Katie Aalto, Guy Greenwood, Michela McFarlane, and Pete Reston are built on mutual trust, with her openness helping to relieve tension within the group. She also shares a connection with the McFarlane family, as Theodore McFarlane saved her life and his daughter Michela becomes a close friend.
Nanao's development centers on shifting from a death-seeking warrior to someone who seeks meaning in life itself. Through the encouragement of Oliver and her friends, she begins to abandon her suicidal impulses and commits to exploring what it means to live, not just fight. This growth is a central part of her arc in the early story.
Nanao possesses a rare physical trait called the Pure White constitution. Her hair is naturally black and reaches her waist, but when she circulates magical power intensely, her hair turns silver or pure white. This trait is a sign of her unique magical circulation. Her primary skill is swordsmanship, which is formidable enough to match Oliver Horn even without formal magical training. She creates the Seventh Spellblade, a technique that surpasses the six previously known invincible spellblades in the world. This attack transcends natural law, cutting through any obstacle the user perceives, including the concepts of distance and time, and returning matter to ether. She develops this ability unconsciously during a life-or-death battle against a senior student. As a newcomer to magic, she lacks the broad knowledge of her classmates but compensates with raw talent and combat instinct.
