Description
Jirou Yakuin is the main protagonist of the story, a high school student whose personality has been deeply shaped by past experiences. Born on December 26, he is a tall young man with dark blue hair styled in a short cut with bangs and distinctive red-purple eyes. His standard school uniform typically includes a dark blue necktie, which sets him apart from other male students, while his casual clothing outside of school tends to consist of plain, monochrome t-shirts and shorts.
During his grade school years, Jirou was once a cheerful, sociable, and physically active boy who was celebrated as one of the fastest runners in his school. However, his personality changed dramatically in middle school following a series of painful incidents involving his childhood friend and crush, Shiori Sakurazaka. The most significant event was a misunderstanding when he attempted to confess his love to her, and she replied that they should always be friends. This unintentional rejection shattered his self-esteem, causing him to become meek, anxious, and reclusive. As a result, he began to retreat from social interactions, believing he would only embarrass himself or experience failure.
By the time he reaches high school, Jirou has an introverted and high-strung personality. He is known for being unsociable, having few friends, and often spends his free time alone or with his only close friend, Sadaharu Kamo, playing video games. He lacks self-confidence and harbors an inferiority complex, frequently comparing himself unfavorably to more popular and athletic peers like Minami Tenjin. He avoids being the center of attention or interacting with others for fear of being judged. This negative self-perception extends to his relationships, as he often distances himself from others, particularly girls like Akari Watanabe, because he worries they will be judged for associating with him.
Despite his withdrawn nature, Jirou retains a caring and kind personality, traits that have persisted since his childhood. He is helpful and has difficulty refusing requests, often accepting blame in situations that are not his fault to avoid conflict. However, his kindness can also be a hindrance, as his desire to keep everyone happy often leads to indecisiveness when faced with difficult dilemmas involving the feelings of those he cares about.
Jirou's primary motivation is initially to be romantically involved with his childhood friend, Shiori Sakurazaka. He enters the school's Marriage Practical, a program where students are paired as pretend married couples, with the goal of earning enough points to switch partners and be with Shiori. This goal forces him to cooperate with his assigned partner, Akari Watanabe, a popular and flashy girl he initially holds negative preconceptions about due to her gyaru appearance. He is willing to act as a devoted "husband" to Akari if it helps him achieve his ultimate objective of pairing with Shiori.
Jirou's role in the story is largely defined by his personal growth, which is catalyzed by his forced cohabitation with Akari. Their relationship begins with friction and mutual bickering, but as they spend more time together, she becomes a significant emotional support and catalyst for his development. Through his interactions with Akari, he begins to become more proactive, learning to cook and taking on household chores after realizing she had been doing most of the work alone. He also starts exercising daily with her, moving away from his reclusive, homebody lifestyle. A pivotal moment in his development occurs during the sports festival, where he reluctantly agrees to replace an injured student in a relay race. His participation and subsequent victory help him gain confidence in his own reliability and begins to ease his inferiority complex, earning the respect of his former rival, Minami Tenjin.
Key relationships define much of Jirou's emotional arc. His bond with Shiori is rooted in a long history and mutual, unspoken feelings, but it remains marked by the awkwardness and distance created by their middle school misunderstanding. His relationship with Akari evolves from tense cooperation to deep reliance and mutual affection. He becomes her emotional pillar, and she helps him become less tense around people. Their connection deepens through shared experiences, including their first kiss, leading Jirou to a profound internal conflict as he begins to realize he has fallen in love with Akari, even as he struggles with his lingering feelings for Shiori. His friendship with Sadaharu Kamo provides a comfortable space for him, as they bond over shared interests and their mutual inability to socialize with girls, though Sadaharu's eccentric behavior sometimes leaves Jirou perplexed. His dynamic with Minami Tenjin shifts from jealousy to mutual respect, a change solidified after their collaboration during the sports festival.
Throughout the story, Jirou demonstrates a few notable abilities, though they are not superhuman. In his past, he was one of the fastest runners in his school, an ability that resurfaces during the sports festival relay race. As the series progresses, he acquires practical domestic skills, learning to cook and becoming notably skilled at making omelettes. His development is also reflected in subtle personal changes, such as his favorite ice cream flavor shifting from chocolate to vanilla after bonding with Akari.
