Description
Arnest Flaming is the top student at Rosewood Academy, where she is known by the formidable alias of the Empress. As the eldest daughter of the prestigious House of Flaming, she carries the weight of her family's legacy, which demands its members remain at the pinnacle of the academy. She is an eighteen-year-old young woman with long, vermilion hair and red eyes. Her hair color was not originally red; it was turned from black to its current fiery shade by the curse of her family's treasured demon sword, Asmodeus, which she has wielded since the age of six.
Arnest initially presents a strict, ferocious, and somewhat intimidating exterior. She holds great pride in her academy and reacts sharply to any disrespect shown towards it. Her reputation and family status are a source of personal irritation, and she becomes infuriated when others treat her as superior simply because of her noble birth. Despite this fearsome demeanor, she possesses a gentle and moral side. She gets flustered easily, particularly in social situations involving the protagonist, Blade, and shows a softer, more vulnerable side after he helps her. A notable quirk that emerges is her previously undiscovered love for sweets; having never tried them before, she quickly becomes unable to resist them.
The central conflict of her personal history involves the cursed sword Asmodeus. At age six, her curiosity led her to steal the keys to the room where the sword was sealed. Upon touching it, she was immediately consumed by its curse, went berserk, and killed several residents of her own household before collapsing. For years after, she lived with the constant fear of the demonic sword's influence, developing an iron will to keep its murderous nature in check. Her primary role in the story begins with her confronting Blade, a new transfer student whose nonchalant and unusual behavior clashes with her rigid personality. Initially distrustful and antagonistic toward him, she becomes the first person to recognize that his power far surpasses her own. Her relationship with Blade is the most significant in her development. He becomes her very first friend, a concept that flusters her deeply when he states it plainly. It is with his help that she undergoes a ritual to confront and subdue the demon within Asmodeus once and for all.
Arnest undergoes considerable development following her liberation from the sword's curse. She abandons her former, severe hairstyle and begins letting her long hair down, which symbolizes a significant shift in her personality. She becomes more relaxed, less argumentative, and more open to the unreasonable demands of her surroundings, often becoming the straight man to Blade and her classmates' antics. Her peers even give her the nickname Anna.
As the academy's top student, Arnest is an exceptionally powerful warrior, said to be capable of outmatching a professor. She is a skilled user of a flame magic sword, which is Asmodeus. After subduing the demon, the sword remains with her in a miniature form. In battle, she can access multiple transformation states known as Demon Modes, which progressively unlock greater power. These modes range from a form where she revives as a being of fire to higher levels where she can fuse with another character to achieve power on a divine level.
