Description
Shide, also known as Four-Armed Shide or the four-armed shadow, is a central antagonist who operates as a human-Shadow hybrid. His true identity is Shidehiko Hishigata, the founder of the Hishigata family of doctors on Hitogashima Island, though in the present day he assumes the civilian persona of Masahito Karikiri, the affable head priest of the Hiruko Shrine. His history on the island spans over three centuries, beginning when he first encountered Haine, the original entity who arrived via a meteorite. Rather than simply serving her, he took advantage of her childlike nature and used her abilities for his own ends, eventually tricking her into bearing his child. This child was a copy of himself, and he manipulated Haine into transferring his personality and memories into this new body, a process he repeated across generations to achieve effective immortality.
In his true shadow form, Shide appears as a muscular, black humanoid figure distinguished by having four arms and four eyes, a physical manifestation of his unique nature. Underneath his friendly and cheerful facade as the shrine priest, his genuine personality is revealed to be ruthlessly selfish, cunning, and profoundly cruel. He displays a sadistic glee in the suffering of others, particularly that of the protagonist Shinpei, and is described as being completely unsympathetic and irredeemable, caring for no one beyond himself. His ultimate motivation is not loyalty to Haine but a nihilistic and self-centered wish to witness the end of the world. Having lived for over 300 years, he desires to see humanity's conclusion; when he realizes that his method of body-hopping is finite and Haine's power is waning, he decides that if he cannot live to see the world end, he will bring about its destruction himself.
Within the story, Shide acts as the true mastermind behind the shadow invasion of Hitogashima, manipulating Haine and events from behind the scenes to orchestrate a mass human sacrifice during the island's festival. His primary role is that of an enforcer and a nearly unstoppable obstacle for Shinpei and his allies. He is personally responsible for numerous deaths across the different time loops, including that of Shinpei's parents, who discovered Haine's cave.
His most significant relationship is with Haine. While he appears as her right-hand man, he is in fact a master manipulator who uses her for his own immortality and power. He not only tricked her into bearing his descendants but ultimately discards her, using her as a living battery when she is no longer useful, a betrayal that even shocks Haine. His other key relationships are antagonistic, primarily with Shinpei Ajiro, Ushio, and Ryuunosuke. He views Shinpei's time-leaping ability as a nuisance and engages in a protracted, brutal conflict to eliminate him and prevent his plans from being stopped.
Throughout the narrative, Shide demonstrates little to no development or change of heart. Attempts by the heroes to appeal to his humanity or remind him of his past family are met with laughter and a declaration that the past no longer holds any meaning for him, cementing his complete dedication to his destructive goal. He is eventually defeated not through a change in character but through the combined efforts of the protagonists who sever his connection to Haine's power, the source of his immortality and regeneration.
Shide possesses a wide array of notable abilities that make him a formidable opponent. As a shadow hybrid, he can copy human data and has enhanced physical capabilities. He possesses a form of immortality that relies on his connection to Haine, and he can create multiple body clones of himself, controlling them from a hidden true body. He is highly proficient with various weapons, including firearms and a naginata. His most distinct power comes from his shadow armor, which grants him regeneration, shapeshifting, and the ability to project an ability called Echo. Echo allows him to copy any weapon or action he observes and reflect it back at his opponent with identical force and properties, effectively neutralizing attacks. He can also create portals to the timeless world of the shadows known as Tokoyo and is one of the few beings capable of moving within it. However, his regeneration can be hampered by fire, and he relies on Haine for his continued existence; killing her or cutting his tie to her power is a permanent way to eliminate him.
