TV-Series
Description
Director Maso is a character from the Duel Masters King! anime, distinguished by his unusual and memorable appearance. He is a muscular, heavily built man who wears a standard business suit combined with pieces of armor and a helmet, creating a visual blend of a corporate salaryman and a warrior. During the day, he works as a department head at a small or medium-sized company, presenting the facade of an upstanding and proper businessman. However, this is a cover for his secret identity as a member of the Five Gattles, an elite unit within the larger Gattle organization led by Jendle. In this capacity, he commands his own small team of three subordinates named Amino, Sasami, and Soy, who are collectively known as the Proteins.

In terms of personality, Director Maso is characterized by a very polite and businesslike demeanor, which persists even when he is acting as an antagonist. This is notably demonstrated when he presents his business card to the protagonist, Joe Kirifuda, upon their first meeting, despite them being enemies. He speaks with a formal and proper tone, using the first-person pronoun watashi. A distinctive speech quirk is his habit of adding massou to the end of his sentences and frequently using the word tadashiku, meaning correctly, which reflects his obsession with doing things by the book. Despite his role in a villainous organization, he is not portrayed as a fundamentally evil person. His subordinates are deeply loyal to him, a bond formed because he reached out to help them when they were isolated and alone at a training gym.

Director Maso's primary motivation throughout the story is to serve the Five Gattles and carry out their orders, which often involve obtaining powerful or mysterious items such as an ancient scroll. His role in the story is that of a recurring adversary, albeit one who is often outmatched. He participates in several duels against the main characters, frequently with the goal of retrieving a target or exacting revenge for a previous defeat. His extreme seriousness and straightforward nature make him prone to being tricked by the protagonists' schemes. In one instance, he falls for a simple ruse where Joe impersonates his leader, Jendle, to lure him into a trap, which then fuels his desire for a rematch on the grounds of righteous indignation.

Director Maso has several key relationships that define his place in the narrative. His most significant connection is with his three subordinates, the Proteins, who follow his orders without question and look up to him with great respect. Within the Five Gattles, he serves under the leader Jendle. His primary adversarial relationships are with the young duelists Joe Kirifuda and Kira, as well as the adversary Zero Jr., all of whom he challenges and loses to in duels. Notably, the color schemes of the Proteins' clothing—yellow, purple, and green—directly correspond to the Light, Darkness, and Nature civilizations that Director Maso himself uses in his own deck, which centers on the Connected Dispectors.

Director Maso does not undergo significant character development or change in his personality or allegiance over the course of the series. His journey is more defined by his repeated defeats and his role in the eventual dissolution of the Gattle organization. In the later stages of the story, he, along with the other members of the Five Gattles, is formally disbanded, after which he and the Proteins exit the narrative. His numerous duels all end in loss, whether against main characters like Joe and Kira or in brief, off-screen defeats against others like Zero Jr., cementing his status as a competent but ultimately unsuccessful antagonist.

Regarding his abilities in the game of Duel Masters, Director Maso is a player who uses a deck comprising the Light, Darkness, and Nature civilizations. His strategy is built around the Connected Dispectors, with his signature cards including G.O.D.Z.A, Connected Extreme World, Grateful Ven, and Connected Breaker Horror. His strict and methodical personality even extends to his dueling, where he verbally announces his intent to summon his creatures correctly. However, this dedication to the rules is ironically undercut by instances where he makes rule mistakes while attempting to perform a summon the right way. In terms of physical prowess, official information lists his height as 178 cm and his weight as 100 kg, with stated likes being authority and entertaining guests.
