Description
Magi is a character from the Duel Masters King! anime, where he serves as a member of the Five Gattles, the elite group of duelists operating under the command of the leader Jendle. Within this organization, Magi holds the rank of Gattle 3, marking him as a significant, if not always successful, enforcer for the group.
In terms of appearance, Magi is a tall, otherworldly-looking man, standing approximately 200 centimeters in height. He has purple skin, blue lips, and yellow eyes, giving him a distinctly non-human and somewhat eerie presence that complements his chosen persona. His very name suggests someone with supernatural powers, and he cultivates this image by speaking in what sounds like mystical incantations and claiming to use psychic abilities to control his cards and influence events.
However, this is largely an act. For most of the series, Magi cannot actually use any genuine psychic powers. His elaborate chants are typically revealed to be nothing more than gibberish or, upon closer inspection, insults. When the collar of his clothing is closed, he is capable of speaking completely normally, exposing his performance as a facade. He frequently tries to solve problems through brute force or underhanded tactics rather than any real magic, leading to a significant disconnect between the powerful image he tries to project and the clumsy reality of his actions. He is often looked down upon by his allies, which fuels a desire to eventually prove them wrong and earn their respect.
Despite his comedic failings, Magi is deeply loyal to Jendle. He is shown working hard to meet Jendle's expectations, engaging in strength training, destructive activities, and dedicated practice at Duel Masters. This loyalty is a core part of his motivation, as he strives to be a valuable asset to the Five Gattles, even if his efforts consistently fall short.
Magi’s primary role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist. He is often dispatched to interfere with the protagonist, Joe Kirifuda, and his friends, attempting to steal powerful cards or foil their plans. His first appearance involves him trailing Joe and Kira back to the Showa era in an attempt to steal the "Three Sacred Treasures" of Duel Masters, a scheme that ends in his defeat at Kira's hands. Throughout the series, he duels against Kira, Bolts, Joe Kirifuda, and Cap, losing every single one of these five official matches. This perfect losing record establishes him as a character who consistently serves as a benchmark for the heroes' strength, often being defeated just as they unveil a new powerful card or strategy.
His dueling style reflects his allegiance to the Five Gattles. Magi typically uses a multi-civilization deck, combining the civilizations of Light, Water, and Fire. His strategy focuses on creatures of the Dispector race and powerful spells. His signature cards include hybrid creatures like Zardiclica, Hybrid Winds Dragon; Galingmar, Hybrid Starve Mobile; and Ulvolans, Hybrid Striking Elemental, which form the core of his combos. In his duel against Joe, he even used a deck that briefly incorporated the Darkness civilization, custom-built for him by Jendle.
Magi undergoes a notable, albeit brief, development late in the series. In episode 38, while seeking a rematch with Kira in the ancient world of the Light civilization, he is possessed by the powerful creature Arc Zeos. In this state, it is revealed that he does possess a genuine psychic ability: the power of mind control. However, in a cruel twist of fate, he attempts to use this power on the immensely powerful Arc Zeos, who quickly overpowers and fully takes over Magi's body. This leads to his defeat, and after being freed, he suffers a direct attack that leaves him in a ruined state. This event proves that his claims of being an esper were not entirely a lie, but his own incompetence and choice of target turned his newfound power into a disaster. Following this humiliation, Magi, along with the other Gattles, is officially dismissed by Jendle, marking his exit from the series.
