Description
Naofumi Iwatani is a young man originally from modern-day Japan who is forcibly summoned to the parallel world of Melromarc along with three other youths to serve as one of the four Cardinal Heroes, entrusted with defending the world from the Waves of Calamity. He is chosen as the Shield Hero, a role that grants him the Legendary Shield as his sole weapon. His early days in the new world are marked by betrayal: Princess Malty S. Melromarc falsely accuses him of attempted assault, robs him, and turns the kingdom against him. This experience shatters his initial optimism and trust, leaving him deeply cynical, pragmatic, and wary of others. He becomes reluctant to form bonds without guarantees, often demanding payment upfront or using slave contracts to ensure loyalty.
Driven by a need to survive and a growing desire to protect those who have proven themselves worthy of his trust, Naofumi’s motivations center on safeguarding his newfound family and overcoming the threats that endanger them. He views his role as a hero not as an honor but as a burden, and he does not hesitate to employ ruthless or unorthodox methods when necessary, earning him a reputation as a morally ambiguous figure. Despite his harsh exterior, he is fiercely protective of his companions and shows a surprisingly caring side once his walls are lowered.
In the second season, Naofumi’s role expands from a survival-focused outcast to a capable leader and tactician. He is tasked with confronting the Spirit Tortoise, an ancient guardian beast that has been corrupted by a rogue scientist from another world named Kyo Ethnina. Alongside his party, Naofumi faces the devastating beast and later pursues Kyo into a parallel dimension. During this arc, he meets Ost Horai, the Tortoise’s familiar, who sacrifices herself to help stop the beast, leaving a lasting emotional impact on him. He also encounters Rishia Ivyred, a timid former member of the Bow Hero’s party whom he takes under his wing and trains into a competent fighter. In Kyo’s world, his Legendary Shield is temporarily suppressed, but he is chosen by the Vassal Mirror as its new wielder, gaining a secondary weapon.
Naofumi’s relationships are central to his character. Raphtalia, a demi-human he initially bought as a slave, becomes his most trusted ally and the first person to earn his genuine faith. He treats her like a cherished family member rather than a servant. Filo, a filolial queen he hatched from an egg, is regarded as a daughter figure, and he spoils her while also teaching her to fight. His bond with Rishia grows as he helps her overcome her insecurities. Although he remains guarded around strangers, he gradually develops a grudging respect for allies like L’Arc Berg, who acts as an older brother figure, and Kizuna Kazayama, the Hunting Hero from another world.
The second season sees significant character development for Naofumi. He moves beyond his initial hatred and isolation, learning to shoulder the burdens of leadership and the weight of loss. Ost’s sacrifice deepens his understanding of the cost of heroism, and his experiences in the alternate world force him to adapt and trust his party more. He becomes more composed and strategic, no longer driven solely by anger but by a sense of responsibility toward those under his care.
Notable abilities stem from the Legendary Shield, which can absorb materials to unlock new forms and skills. Naofumi’s primary strength is his immense defensive power, allowing him to withstand blows that would incapacitate others. He can deploy shields that protect allies, trap enemies, or counterattack. Among his most powerful transformations is the Cursed Shield of Wrath, which unleashes black flames fueled by his anger but risks consuming him with darkness. In the alternate world, he temporarily wields the Vassal Mirror, granting him additional reflective and support capabilities. Beyond equipment, his strategic mind and merchant skills make him a resourceful leader, capable of organizing campaigns, managing finances, and forging items to support his party.
