Description
Hallyang Seo is a significant supporting character known as a member of The Six, a group of the most powerful fighters in the world. He is also recognized as the twenty-seventh leader of the National Homeless Association, a title he later passes on. Among his peers, he holds the nicknames The Weapon Master for his unparalleled skill with arms and The Hulk, a reference to his temperament in his younger days.
In terms of background, Hallyang was appointed leader of the homeless association at some point in the past, a role through which he came into possession of Gáe Bolg, a wooden staff that would become his most trusted and symbolic weapon. His past is marked by a critical confrontation seventeen years before the main events, when The Six fought the legendary fighter Jin Taejin. This battle was so destructive that it resulted in ten percent of South Korea sinking. Hallyang personally suffered a humiliating defeat, an event that fundamentally reshaped his character.
Before that defeat, Hallyang was known to be arrogant and temperamental, which earned him his Hulk nickname. After losing to Jin Taejin, his personality underwent a dramatic shift. He became far calmer, more mischievous, and developed a playful, almost lazy demeanor. This is evident in his early interactions with younger characters, such as when he quickly and nonchalantly takes money from Jin Mori and Jin Pumgwang’s wallet, treating it as a casual joke. Despite his laid-back exterior, he retains a sharp, analytical mind and demonstrates high intelligence, particularly in combat. He can quickly deduce an opponent’s weaknesses, as shown when he figured out the flaws in the Jaecheondaesong mode during a fight.
Hallyang’s central motivation is not for personal glory but seems rooted in a sense of duty and a desire to pass on his knowledge. He plays a crucial role in the story as a mentor and trainer, preparing the next generation of fighters. He takes on the task of teaching his unique martial arts style to Mori Jin, Mori Hui, and Mira Yoo, helping them get ready for the subsequent God of High School tournament.
His key relationships are defined by his role within The Six and his personal history. He holds a deep respect and perhaps a lingering fear of Jin Taejin, the man who defeated him and changed his ways. He also has a strong bond with his subordinates in the homeless association, and he notably uses some of the money he takes from Mori to buy them food. His relationship with Park Mujin, the leader of The Six, is that of a powerful subordinate and ally. He also has a significant, though brief, teacher-student relationship with Mori Jin, Mori Hui, and Mira Yoo. His fight against Hui Mori, a powerful clone of a god, demonstrates the immense respect between them as martial artists, even though he ultimately loses.
Hallyang’s most notable development as a character is his journey from an arrogant powerhouse to a calm and wizened master. This change is a direct result of his defeat, suggesting he learned humility and the limits of raw arrogance. Later in the story, he continues to demonstrate his willingness to sacrifice himself for his goals, such as when he puts a grenade inside the mouth of the god Zeus, losing his hand in the process but managing to knock out a tooth from the divine being.
His abilities are formidable, placing him among the strongest humans in the world, even without using Borrowed Power, the supernatural ability many other fighters rely on. His true strength comes from his own physical prowess and his mastery over a vast arsenal of weapons. He is a master of The 108 Agonies, also known as the 108 National Treasures, a collection that includes staffs, swords, spears, axes, bazookas, rifles, and grenades. He is most often seen fighting with his favored staff, Gáe Bolg.
His self-created martial art is called Hallyang Style Pumba. This style encompasses a wide range of techniques for various weapons, but is most prominently displayed with his staff. Notable techniques include the 8th Verse: Beggar's Song Dance, which creates a spherical deflection barrier; the 13th Verse: Serpent, which allows the staff to bend and weave around obstacles; and the 19th Verse: Dog Seller, which generates a destructive whirlwind by spinning the staff. His ultimate technique, and one of his most powerful attacks, is the Pumba Zero Stance: Panhandler, a devastating diagonal slash that cleaves the earth and is powerful enough to bruise and injure the bodies of top-tier gods like Zeus and Odin.
