Description
Gras is a central character from the anime Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, introduced several years after the story’s opening arc. He works as a substitute gladiator, a profession that puts him in dangerous situations, often fighting in the place of noblemen. His life is marked by profound personal tragedy, as he lost his entire family to a widespread epidemic that swept through his region. This loss initially plunged him into deep despair.

However, Gras finds a powerful antidote to his grief in the observation of the night sky, specifically the planet Mars. Discovering the beauty and order of the cosmos gives him a renewed purpose and a reason to live, transforming him into a passionate, if self-taught, astronomy enthusiast. His defining personality trait is his exceptionally positive and cheerful mindset, which stands in stark contrast to the grim outlook of his friend and fellow gladiator, Oczy. Even when facing sadness or mortal danger, Gras looks for reasons to smile and look forward, displaying a selfless courage that leads him to help others at great personal risk.

Gras’s role in the narrative is pivotal as a seeker and a torchbearer. Alongside Oczy, he comes into possession of a hidden stone chest containing the heretical research of previous characters, which outlines a heliocentric model of the universe. Though he lacks the formal education to fully grasp the complex astronomical calculations, he intuitively understands the profound importance of the findings and feels a deep connection to the persecuted scholars who came before him. His motivations are rooted in preserving and passing on this forbidden knowledge, which he sees as the ultimate truth about humanity’s place in the cosmos.

His key relationship is with Oczy, his partner in the gladiator guild. The two are opposites, with Gras representing hope and Oczy embodying cynicism and fear. Throughout their journey to transport a heretic, Gras persistently tries to convince Oczy to believe in the beauty and worth of the world, challenging Oczy’s fear of looking at the stars. This dynamic becomes the emotional core of their shared story arc.

Gras undergoes a significant, albeit brief, development. He transitions from a man whose hope was restored by the stars to one who understands that hope must be actively nurtured in the hearts of others. His ultimate act of development is a selfless sacrifice. While attempting to cross a dilapidated bridge, the structure collapses, leaving him hanging perilously over a chasm. Accepting his fate, he gives Oczy the choice to either return to a life of conformity or to carry their knowledge forward. By letting go and falling to his death, Gras symbolically passes the torch, leaving behind a spherical necklace—a precious object containing the heretical wisdom—for Oczy to continue the mission.

His notable abilities are not physical despite his work as a gladiator. Instead, he possesses a sharp observational skill regarding the night sky and a natural talent for understanding the essence of astronomical concepts. More importantly, his greatest strength is his unwavering conviction and his ability to inspire bravery in others, even in the face of absolute despair.
