Description
Alderp, also known as Alexei Barnes Alderp, is a character from the anime KonoSuba who serves as the corrupt feudal lord governing the town of Axel and its surrounding territories. He is a tall, obese, middle-aged man with a rough appearance. A notable feature is his shoulder-length blond hair and matching mustache, though his hair is actually a wig; beneath it, he is bald. He typically wears flamboyant clothing in red and blue adorned with golden stripes, complete with white gloves, which contributes to his ostentatious and haughty demeanor.
Alderp is the embodiment of a greedy, selfish, and utterly corrupt noble. His personality is defined by his cruelty, his love of power, and a willingness to use any underhanded method for personal gain, including extortion, bribery, and manipulation. He possesses a level of cunning and perverseness that rivals the protagonist Kazuma, effectively serving as an evil counterpart who cares nothing for comrades or friends. Alderp is also driven by obsessive lust, most notably targeting the crusader Darkness, and is known to forcibly marry women only to discard them when he grows bored.
Alderp's primary motivation is the accumulation of wealth, power, and the satisfaction of his desires, with his most prominent goal being to claim Darkness as his wife. He has been obsessed with her since she was young and relentlessly schemes to force a marriage, exploiting the debts of the Dustiness family and using his political power to corner her. He believes he has ascended to his position through merit, but his success is almost entirely built on the use of illegal artifacts and demonic assistance.
In the story, Alderp is a major antagonist who causes significant trouble for Kazuma's party. He first appears after his mansion is accidentally destroyed by Kazuma following the battle with the Mobile Fortress Destroyer. Seeking revenge, he uses his influence to rig a trial, nearly getting Kazuma sentenced to death before Darkness intervenes. Later, while the party is in the royal capital, Kazuma and his friends are forced to stay at Alderp's residence as part of a mission. During this time, Alderp continues his lecherous behavior, using a magic mirror to spy on Darkness in the bath. His ultimate scheme involves forcing Darkness into a wedding to erase a massive debt, but this plot is shattered when Kazuma and his allies rescue her. Following his public exposure and downfall, Alderp is dragged to hell by the demon he summoned, with his disappearance being officially recorded as a simple vanishing.
Alderp's key relationships are defined by his exploitative nature. He is obsessively fixated on Darkness, viewing her as a prize to be won. He maintains a master-servant relationship with Maxwell, a demon he summoned who can alter memories and manipulate events, which Alderp uses to cover up his crimes. His adopted son, Alexei Barnes Walther, is a polite and honest young man who stands in stark contrast to Alderp and inadvertently foils some of his plans. He also has a business relationship with the devil Vanir, which ultimately leads to his downfall when Vanir tricks him into breaking his contract with Maxwell.
Alderp undergoes a significant negative development, rising to power through cheating only to experience a complete and utter fall. He begins as the untouchable lord of Axel who believes he can escape all consequences. However, his arrogance and the specific terms of his contract with the amnesiac demon Maxwell, which deferred payment for services, eventually lead to his ruin. When the contract is voided, every crime he ever committed is exposed, he is stripped of all his wealth and titles, and he is dragged off to hell as payment for his accumulated debts.
Alderp possesses no notable combat abilities of his own, relying instead on two powerful divine artifacts that are typically reserved for reincarnated individuals. The first artifact allows him to summon random monsters, which he used to summon and bind the demon Maxwell to his service. The second is a tool that enables him to swap bodies with another person, which he planned to use to marry Darkness by inhabiting his adopted son's younger body. Beyond these artifacts, his main abilities are his criminal intelligence, his skill for deception, and his willingness to abuse his noble authority.
