Description
Aura La Ghigliottina, more commonly known as Aura the Guillotine, is a major antagonist encountered during the journey through the Northern Lands. She is a member of the Seven Sages of Destruction, a group of powerful demons who were the most trusted servants of the Demon King. Her existence spans over five hundred years, and she survived the Demon King's defeat, remaining hidden for decades before re-emerging to pursue her own ambitions.

In appearance, Aura is a petite female demon with dark blue eyes and long pink hair. Her hair is styled into two large pigtails tied at the shoulder, with the remaining hair in each sectioned off into three smaller braids. She has two light brown horns protruding through her hair. Her attire consists of a revealing dark blue sleeveless bodice with white trimmings and a cutout at the navel, paired with a ruffled white skirt. A large pink frilly cape is attached around her waist, and she wears dark blue opera gloves as well as striped leggings. She also wears two golden necklaces and carries her magical artifact, the Scales of Obedience.

As a demon, Aura's personality is defined by a fundamental lack of human emotions such as empathy or compassion. She is selfish, power-hungry, and individualistic, viewing other beings primarily as tools or resources to be controlled. Her only notable loyalty was toward the former Demon King. She displays a strong confidence in the superiority of her own magic and seems to enjoy battles where she believes she holds the advantage. However, unlike many of her kind who are driven by pride, Aura is also notably cautious and pragmatic. When she previously faced the Hero Party, including the elf mage Frieren, she recognized she could not win and chose to retreat rather than sacrifice herself, a decision that ensured her survival. This careful nature is also evident in how she responds to the loss of her own servants; upon learning that her subordinates Lügner, Linie, and Draht failed in their mission, she shows no distress or concern for them.

Aura's primary motivation is to maintain her power and continue her legacy. After the death of the Demon King and the subsequent passing of the hero Himmel, she saw an opportunity to expand her influence once more. She launched a campaign to take over Graf Granat's Domain, a city protected by a powerful magical barrier. To achieve this, she employed a strategy of deception, sending her servants to pose as peace envoys with the real goal of manipulating the city's leader into lowering the barrier. Her actions are driven by a desire to grow her undead army and assert her dominance over human territories.

In the story, Aura serves as the central antagonist of the second major narrative arc. Her role is to provide a direct and powerful challenge to Frieren, Fern, and Stark, forcing them to confront a demon whose power is not just brute force but a cunning magical ability. Her confrontation with Frieren is a pivotal moment that highlights the elf mage's millennia of experience and her unorthodox strategies. Aura's attack on Graf Granat's Domain creates a high-stakes situation where the protagonists must rescue the city's leader and face a formidable demon army.

Key relationships for Aura include her connection to the Demon King, whom she served, and her subordinates, whom she views as expendable assets. Her most significant relationship in the narrative is her adversarial one with Frieren. This is not a new rivalry; Aura had previously clashed with the Hero Party and chose to flee. Their second encounter is defined by Aura's overconfidence in her own power and her fatal underestimation of Frieren, who she believes has barely changed in eighty years. Aura also has a history with the other Sages of Destruction, having fought alongside them in a great battle against the Hero of the South, where she was one of the few survivors.

In terms of development, Aura is a static character who does not undergo a meaningful internal change. Her role is to be a formidable obstacle whose defeat serves to develop other characters, particularly Frieren. Her overconfidence in her magic and her inability to comprehend a strategy as counterintuitive as permanently suppressing one's mana lead directly to her downfall. Her end is ironic: the demon known for beheading others is ultimately forced by her own magic to decapitate herself. This moment solidifies her defeat and serves as a powerful demonstration of Frieren's cunning and the vast difference in their experience.

Aura's most notable ability is her unique magic, the Spell of Obedience: Auserlese. She uses this spell in conjunction with her magical artifact, the Scales of Obedience. The spell works by weighing the souls of herself and her target on the scales, effectively comparing the total amount of mana each possesses. The individual with the greater mana gains absolute and eternal control over the body of the one with lesser mana, turning them into a puppet. The risk of this spell is extremely high, as Aura puts her own soul on the line; if her opponent has more mana, she will fall under their control. For over five hundred years, Aura's immense mana pool meant she never encountered an opponent with more power, making her feel invincible. However, a person with an exceptionally strong will can temporarily resist this control. To eliminate this risk entirely, Aura began beheading all those she subjugated, ensuring they could never rebel, which earned her the title Aura the Guillotine. She commands an army of these headless puppets, consisting of the bodies of past victims, which she uses to overwhelm her enemies. Aura is also capable of flight and has demonstrated the ability to control multiple puppets simultaneously in combat.
