Description
Thunder Jet (Rai Ryuga) begins as a young soldier in the Kingdom of Gojo's army, driven by a desire to secure compensation for fallen comrades after King Danjo orders a suicidal attack. This defiance nearly costs him his life but reveals his fierce loyalty to subordinates and draws Princess Reila's intervention.

His rapid military ascent—from private to battalion commander—stems from consecutive combat victories, including slaying King Shuzen of Sakura. Shuzen's daughter Shimon witnesses this act and swears vengeance. Rai evolves from an idealistic warrior into an ambitious figure increasingly willing to accept heavy casualties to become galactic emperor. This tension between his initial ideals and the ruthless demands of power shapes his arc.

Key relationships define his path: the monk Unkai (Kunhai) offers unwavering loyalty and brute strength; the 14-year-old Tasuke (Taskee) sacrifices himself by detonating explosives on enemy warships to secure Rai's victory; and Roha (Rogina/Rouha), a mentor and one of the Four Heavenly Generals, initially backs him but later becomes a formidable adversary. After Rai severely wounds her in a duel, she entrusts him with her mission before leaping into a star.

Tragic losses mark him deeply. Shimon, once bent on avenging her father, marries Rai but dies due to machinations by Danjo's strategist Gen'i. Her death hardens Rai's resolve to unify the galaxy as a just ruler. Later, his wife Simone's demise triggers profound psychological turmoil.

Militarily, Rai rises from infantryman to commander of half the galaxy, pioneering tactics like ship ramming to enable boarding actions. His flagship Kongo boasts a powerful wave-motion cannon. His quest to unite the Milky Way under one rule culminates in confronting Northern warlord Danjo and Southern ruler Masamune.

In the manga continuity, Rai fathers multiple children: Botenmaru (later Ryuuki) with Reila, Shoujimaru (later Ryuuhakuga) with Youshouka, and Jamuka through a secret affair with Masamune. Jamuka becomes central to the sequel *Ibun*, achieving galactic unification five decades after Rai's efforts.

Media portrayals diverge: the anime depicts Rai heroically focused on galactic peace, while the manga delves into his morally ambiguous choices, political marriages, and ambition's tragic costs, crafting a more conflicted character. His design consistently features distinctive large eyebrows and prominent sideburns.
