Description
Ha Jinsung is a High Ranker, a member of the powerful Ha Family, and an influential figure within the shadowy organization known as FUG. He holds a distinguished position within the Tower, recognized as one of the top one hundred High Rankers. His lineage is notable, as he is the grandson of Ha Yurin, the leader of the Ha Family, and Ari Han, the leader of the Ari Family. Jinsung's past is marked by a profound personal tragedy. He fell in love with a woman who was later sold to a branch of the Ha Family. In a fit of rage, he annihilated the entire branch, but he was unable to save her, and she died as well. This event led him to hold a deep grudge against the Ten Great Families and ultimately spurred him to join FUG.
Despite his fearsome reputation and dangerous past, Jinsung often presents a carefree and fun-loving attitude, which can serve as a mask to conceal his true intentions. He has a particular fondness for bragging about the talents of those he trains, especially his student, Jyu Viole Grace. His personality is also tinged with a protective and even paternal affection for his pupils. He is known to buy clothes for Viole every season, much to the latter's chagrin. After being given a lollipop by Ja Wangnan as a substitute for cigarettes, he was for a long time always seen with a lollipop in his mouth instead of smoking.
Ha Jinsung's primary motivation in the story is tied to his role within FUG and his relationship with his pupils. He personally trained both the Slayer Karaka and later Jyu Viole Grace, who is a Slayer Candidate. His actions are often driven by a desire to see Viole grow strong and to protect him, sometimes from other members of FUG itself. He works to respect Viole's decisions, even when they clash with the organization's wishes. While other FUG members may see Viole's companions as burdens, Jinsung claimed he would keep them alive as additional hostages, though this was a lie intended to protect the friends Viole had made.
In the arc titled Tower of God: Part 2 - The Return of the Prince, Ha Jinsung makes his first appearance at a karaoke bar where Viole is meeting with the guide Hwa Ryun. Suspicious of Viole's teammate, Yeon Yihwa, and seeing her Yeon Family hairpin, he accuses her of being a spy from one of the Ten Great Families. When Viole defends her, Jinsung prepares to attack, but Viole preemptively knocks Yihwa unconscious to protect her. Later, at Viole's lodging, Jinsung introduces himself to other members of Viole's team, Ja Wangnan and Goseng, and questions them about whether they bully his prized pupil, before going on at length about Viole being a genius. It is later revealed by Hwa Ryun that Jinsung's original purpose for coming was to eliminate all seven of Viole's teammates to force him to form a stronger team, a plan he abandoned for the time being because he respects Viole's wishes. Later, when Viole is injured protecting his team, Jinsung is troubled and offers to guarantee the team's safety from FUG if they agree to leave Viole, a proposition that Wangnan ultimately rejects.
Ha Jinsung's key relationships are central to his character. His relationship with Twenty-Fifth Baam, whom he calls Viole, is his most significant. Initially viewing Baam as an ordinary Irregular, Jinsung became excited to teach him after witnessing his incredible talent for mimicking techniques after seeing them just once. He deeply cares for Baam's safety, even attempting to stop him from boarding the dangerous Hell Train. He also trained Karaka, another of his students, though Jinsung believes Baam's growth is much faster and that he will one day surpass him. Another former student is Kallavan, a powerful Corps Commander of Zahard's Army. Jinsung once guided Kallavan, encouraging him to take the Essence of Bravery, and repeatedly offered him a position as a Slayer, which Kallavan refused. Their past relationship eventually leads to a confrontation as enemies. A minor but telling relationship is with Ja Wangnan, who gave Jinsung a lollipop and advised him to stop smoking, resulting in a lasting change to Jinsung's habit. Over time, Jinsung's character shows development, mellowing slightly since meeting Baam, to the point where he expresses regret over FUG's treatment of him.
As a fighter, Ha Jinsung is an immensely powerful High Ranker specializing in martial arts and close-quarters combat. As a distinguished member of the Ha Family, he possesses incredible physical strength, speed, and durability. His body is so resilient that he can withstand powerful shinsu cannon blasts without a scratch or take direct hits from powerful lightning spears with almost no damage. He is a master martial artist and an exceptional teacher, having personally molded both Baam and Karaka into powerful fighters. He is a master of the Reverse-Flow Control technique, which can freeze the movements of his opponents, and he is proficient enough to use it on even top-tier High Rankers while heavily injured. He also taught Baam the Floral Butterfly Piercing Technique, a trademark FUG technique that destroys a target from within by disrupting its shinsu flow, and has created his own highly advanced and destructive versions of it, such as the Twin Dragon Tiger Gate. His status is such that even the Elders and Slayers of FUG are wary of angering him, and his power is feared and respected by the forces of Zahard's Army.
