Description
Ichiban Natsuno is a first-year student who enters Meisei Academy in the spring, becoming a new member of the school's esteemed baseball team. He is in the same grade and class as Otomi Tachibana, the team's manager, for whom he develops strong romantic feelings. True to his name, which translates to "Number One Summer," Ichiban is characterized by an enthusiastic and almost fate-driven belief in his own destiny. He proudly declares that his name predestines him to be the summer ace and to lead his team to the famed Summer Koshien tournament at Hanshin Koshien Stadium.
Ichiban's primary motivation is his ambition to become the ace pitcher and achieve glory at the national tournament. He is confident in his abilities on the mound and aspires to fill the role left by the graduating ace, Toma Tachibana. This goal is the driving force behind his actions, leading him to go to great lengths to support the team, including feigning illness to attend crucial games. While he excels on the baseball field, he struggles significantly in his academic studies, and his poor test scores are sometimes used against him by teachers.
In the story, Ichiban functions as one of the promising and energetic newcomers who join the Meisei High School baseball team as it begins a new season. Alongside fellow first-years Arisa Mita and Ryo Akai, he represents the next generation of players for the school. His role on the team is as a pitcher, though he is still developing his form and consistency.
His key relationships are primarily within this new cohort of characters. In addition to his one-sided infatuation with Otomi Tachibana, he shares a competitive dynamic with Ryo Akai, as both are new members joining the team at the same time. His interactions with the established team members, such as Toma, are centered on integrating into the existing system and working toward a common goal.
While the narrative focuses on the team as a whole, Ichiban shows development as an athlete. He is learning to handle the pressures of being a pitcher in competitive high school baseball. In one of the season's games, he is shown struggling with his pitching form, demonstrating that he is a work in progress and highlighting the gap between his confidence and his current level of skill. His notable abilities include a strong passion for the game and a powerful throwing arm, but his development is shown to be a gradual process, as he works to refine his technique and become a more reliable ace for his team.
