Description
Kinryuzan is a fictional character who appears as a participant in the Maximum Tournament. He is a former yokozuna, the highest rank in professional sumo, and during his active career, he was known by the nickname the Earnest Yokozuna. His physical presence in the tournament is formidable, standing at 191.5 centimeters tall and weighing 166 kilograms, with a bulky, muscular build and black hair, typically wearing a dark purple mawashi.

True to his moniker, Kinryuzan possesses a modest and humble personality, with a deep-seated adherence to the traditions and code of sumo wrestling. He shows respect toward his opponents and generally avoids causing unnecessary harm. However, this calm demeanor gives way to anger when he feels sumo traditions are being insulted. This is demonstrated during his first tournament match against Izou Motobe, where he responds with fierce aggression after Motobe attempts to humiliate him by removing his mawashi.

Kinryuzan's primary motivation for entering the Maximum Tournament is straightforward: he believes in the strength of the yokozuna and wishes to represent that tradition. His role in the story is that of a respected and powerful competitor within the tournament bracket. In the first round, he faces Motobe, demonstrating his immense strength by withstanding attacks and ultimately knocking his opponent out with a stomp to the head. His second-round opponent is the professional wrestling legend Kanji Igari. In this match, Kinryuzan proves to be evenly matched in strength with Igari and pushes him to the brink of defeat.

The outcome of the match against Igari is unusual. Kinryuzan is on the verge of winning but, in a move to prevent his heavy body from falling on and crushing the older Igari, he accidentally breaks his own arm and shoulder. His master subsequently throws in the towel, resulting in Kinryuzan's defeat by forfeit. This incident highlights his character: his physical power is immense, but his sense of honor and consideration for an opponent can override his will to win at all costs.

Key relationships in his story include his unnamed master, who oversees his matches and makes the critical decision to end the fight with Igari. He also shares a significant moment with Mitsunari Tokugawa, the tournament organizer, who recognizes Kinryuzan as a considerable force. After his defeat, Kinryuzan has a brief and violent encounter with Yujiro Hanma. Charging at the Ogre, he manages to push him back slightly before Yujiro exerts his full strength, pushing Kinryuzan into the arena wall and nearly breaking his back, demonstrating the vast gap in power between them.

Kinryuzan shows development not within the tournament itself, but in his later appearances. After retiring from sumo, he loses a significant amount of weight, over 100 kilograms, and adopts a more casual appearance, often seen in a suit. He becomes more open-minded, enjoying things that would have been against his sumo code, such as smoking. Furthermore, he takes on the role of a mentor or mediator for Nomi no Sukune the 2nd, a wrestler who practices an ancient form of sumo, showing that his respect for the art has evolved to include unorthodox traditions.

As a fighter, Kinryuzan's notable abilities are rooted entirely in sumo wrestling. His techniques include the shikiri, a preparation stance involving intense staring to gain a psychological edge, as well as powerful headbutts, stomps, and tackles. While he is able to dominate opponents like Motobe and match the strength of Kanji Igari, he has a notable weakness. His conditioning as a rikishi means his stamina is below average, and his full strength can only be exerted for short periods. Also, a psychological flaw is revealed during his fight with Igari, where he becomes disoriented when Igari mimics sumo stances, demonstrating that he can be misled into believing he is in a formal sumo match.
