Description
Pater is a supporting character in Vinland Saga, introduced during the story arc set on Ketil's farm. He is a former slave who worked as a farmhand for the landowner Ketil and later serves as an overseer, directing the farm's slaves in their daily labour, including Thorfinn and Einar when they are bought and brought to the estate. Physically, Pater is an older man with short grey hair and a face marked by scars, and his eyes are almost always depicted as shut, giving him a calm and weathered appearance that reflects a hard life.

His personality is defined by care and steadiness. Pater is compassionate, gentle, and notably calm and mature even in trying circumstances. He is deeply loyal to Ketil, his former master, and continues to serve him faithfully even as Ketil begins to unravel. His helpfulness toward Thorfinn and Einar is closely tied to his own history as a former slave, as he understands the hardships they face and offers them quiet guidance and support rather than harshness.

In the story, Pater acts as the senior hand on Ketil's farm. He helps Thorfinn and Einar adjust to their new lives, instructing them in their duties and showing them patience and kindness. His loyalty is put to the test as the events at the farm escalate: after Arnheid is brutally beaten by Ketil, Pater tends to her wounds, demonstrating his compassion at a moment when his master has abandoned decency. When Ketil leads his men into battle against Canute, Pater chooses to charge into battle at his master's side, showing that his devotion endures even when Ketil loses his grip on reason. Pater survives the conflict and is present to see Thorfinn and Einar off when they leave the farm with Leif to begin a new life.

His key relationships are with Ketil, Thorfinn, Einar, and Arnheid. With Ketil, he is unwavering and loyal. With Thorfinn and Einar, he acts as a mentor-like figure, offering kindness, practical help, and a stabilizing presence to the two slaves. His care for Arnheid is shown through his willingness to treat her injuries after Ketil's violence.

Pater does not possess remarkable combat ability or superhuman strength. His notable qualities are emotional rather than martial: he is observant, empathetic, and composed, able to bring calm and order to those around him. His scarred face hints at a difficult past, but his defining trait is the quiet dignity and compassion with which he carries himself. Throughout his appearances he remains largely consistent rather than undergoing dramatic change, and his enduring loyalty, balanced against his gentleness, makes him a rare source of warmth in a harsh and brutal world.
