Description
James Mirror is the protagonist of the story. He is a young man living on the harsh, icy planet of Coldfoot, which is engulfed in a nebula gas harmful to humans. His home is in an urban sprawl called the Dust Box, where he resides with his grandfather, Ed. To support himself and his family, James works as a part-time prison guard at the White Prison, ferrying inmates who are forced to mine the planet's valuable energy resource, a mineral compound known as Sig. Despite this occupation, his true passion lies in art, and he dreams of becoming a cartoonist.

In terms of personality, James is depicted as a relatable and principled individual who does not fit the mold of a typical action hero. While he carries the weight of his abandoned artistic aspirations, he does not dwell on his lost dreams but instead focuses on practical survival. He embodies a spirit of self-sacrifice, but this is not a reckless trait; he chooses to act only when necessary and does not blame others for prioritizing their own safety. He is focused on saving those who are willing to fight for their chance to survive and works to build a team to carry out their last chance of escape.

James has several key relationships that define his world. He was raised by his grandfather, Ed, who is a strong supporter of James's artistic dreams. His neighbor and close friend is Marnie, a heavily pregnant young woman. James is also close to her family, including her mother Serena and her siblings Connie and Pete. Professionally, he has a fraught relationship with his superior, Captain Bark, who views James with contempt and betrays him on multiple occasions, once leaving him to die and later having him imprisoned for insubordination.

Role in the story and development begin when a routine mining operation goes horribly wrong. After discovering that the planet is inhabited by creatures that feed on Sig, James is thrust into a fight for survival. Throughout the crisis, he endures significant personal loss, particularly the death of his grandfather Ed, who sacrifices himself to save James from one of the creatures. He also loses his friends Connie, Pete, and Serena to the attacks. Despite facing constant danger and betrayal, James evolves from a part-time guard with artistic dreams into a determined leader and the de facto hero of the survivors. He devises plans to fight back against the alien threat, eventually taking charge of a final effort to escape the planet by baiting the creatures, known as the Swarm.

Regarding his abilities, James does not possess any superhuman powers. His notable traits are his practical skills, resilience, and resourcefulness. He is competent enough in his duties as a prison guard to be assigned to emergency response teams. He demonstrates ingenuity by using a robocast to help him and his allies navigate dangerous territory and fend off creatures. His most significant ability is his strategic mind, as he formulates plans and builds a team to survive against overwhelming odds and ensure the group's ultimate escape from the planet.
