Description
Naoto Hachioji, who is most often called Senpai by Hayase Nagatoro, is a second-year student at Kazehaya High School and a dedicated member of the art club. He is an only child raised in Hayama, Kanagawa; both of his parents work as managers and are frequently away from home, which has made him a self-reliant but also socially withdrawn young man. He has a naturally timid and introverted personality, and at the start of the story he avoids social interaction, spending most of his time alone drawing manga and practicing his art. He has curly brown hair and wears glasses, though he later switches to contact lenses.

His most notable trait is a deep passion for art, particularly drawing and painting, and he aspires to become a manga artist. This creative drive serves as both an emotional outlet and a way to communicate feelings he otherwise struggles to express. However, he suffers from low self-confidence and social anxiety, which makes him hesitant to stand up for himself or engage with others. He has a tendency to daydream, a quirk that aligns with his artistic nature and often leaves him lost in thought.

Senpai’s motivations center on personal growth: he wants to find his own voice, both in his artwork and in his relationships. His role in the story is that of the male lead, initially a passive and easily flustered target of Nagatoro’s relentless teasing. Over the course of the series, and especially during the second season titled Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro 2nd Attack, he begins to come out of his shell. He spends more time with Nagatoro in the art club room, and though he remains easily flustered, he shows moments of hidden coolness and assertiveness. His personality does not change overnight; building confidence takes time, but he makes clear progress.

The central relationship in Senpai’s life is with Hayase Nagatoro. What begins as uncomfortable teasing gradually evolves into a playful, affectionate dynamic. Through her provocations, he is pushed to become more assertive and to open up emotionally. He also forms bonds with Nagatoro’s friends—Gamo-chan, Yoshi, and Sakura—who initially appear antagonistic but later become supportive companions. In the second season, the mutual romantic feelings between Senpai and Nagatoro become increasingly obvious to everyone around them, and by its conclusion he confesses his feelings, and the two officially become a couple.

Senpai’s notable ability is his artistic talent, which is considerable for a high school student. He is proficient in various techniques, especially drawing and painting, and uses his art to process his emotions. His creative expression becomes a key part of his identity and a way to connect with others. Throughout the series, and particularly in 2nd Attack, he matures emotionally, learning to embrace his talents and stand up for his dreams, as exemplified by his declaration that he will not let anyone mock his aspirations.
