Description
Grugell, known as the Witch of the Midnight Sun, is a character introduced in the second season of the anime. She is a formidable astral mage who makes her debut in episode six. Her background is rooted in the Nebulis Sovereignty, where she is identified as a member of the House of Hydra, one of the three royal families. Despite her noble standing, she is not a member of the main Nebulis bloodline but refers to herself as a descendant of the Revered Founder, implying she is a distant relative. In the story, she takes on the role of a minor antagonist, driven by a deep-seated loyalty to the Hydra Family's cause, even when it requires acting against the best interests of the Nebulis Sovereignty as a whole.
Grugell possesses a chilling and predatory personality, appropriate for a witch who commands the power of snow. She is depicted as a slender elderly woman, often dressed in red and white vestments reminiscent of a nun's habit, with a red cloak that covers her eyes. Her voice is described as spine-chilling, adding to her menacing presence. In combat, she behaves like a hunter, using her abilities to methodically corner her prey from a distance. Despite her fearsome reputation, she has a notable flaw: she tends to underestimate her opponents, particularly those younger than herself. This arrogance ultimately creates an opening for her enemies to outsmart her. While carrying out her mission to capture Princess Sisbell Lou Nebulis IX, she still displays a degree of respect for the princess's status.
Grugell's primary motivation is her unwavering loyalty to the Hydra Family. This allegiance compels her to participate in key events, such as the Night of the Witch Hunt, during which she joins an attack on the Lou Erz Mansion with the objective of pursuing Sisbell and her accompanying Unit 907. Her role in the story is to serve as a powerful obstacle for the protagonists. She later reappears during Unit 907's infiltration of a facility known as Snow the Sun. There, she briefly engages the Imperial swordsman Iska in battle, though he ultimately manages to escape from her. Her relationships with other characters are largely defined by her antagonistic objectives, placing her in direct conflict with Unit 907 and its members.
Her notable abilities stem from her astral power, which allows her to manipulate snow. The true danger of her power lies in its versatility, as she can create snow ex nihilo, unlike other mages whose abilities are limited by their environment. She can generate massive, sound-absorbing snowbanks capable of stopping machine-gun fire and create ice crystals that injure those without astral protection. Among her specific techniques, she can conjure a powerful snowy blizzard called Valley of Blizzards. She is also capable of producing golems and soldiers made of snow that are resistant to conventional weaponry, as well as a massive snow snake that can fire ice lances from its mouth. Her power is so immense that she is reputed to have single-handedly destroyed an entire company of the Empire. Statements from the voice actor suggest the character is enigmatic and may carry past trauma.
