Description
Mai, also known as May or Mei, is a character from the anime and light novel series. She holds the position of the Third Seat among the Saint Disciples, an elite group of warriors serving the Heavenly Empire, and is known by the nickname Rainstorm.

Mai's background is rooted in her rise through the military ranks of the Empire. She gained her reputation as a soldier while serving as a specialist in the Fifth Division, particularly in the wild and unconquered regions of the Empire known as the unclaimed territories. Her ascent was not due to noble birth or special privileges but was earned through her natural combat talent and the extensive experience she accumulated on dangerous battlefields.

In terms of personality, Mai is characterized by a straightforward, lively, and genuine nature. She is not particularly concerned with formalities and has a habit of teasing her fellow Saint Disciple, Nameless, even though their relationship is largely one-sided. Despite her cheerful and carefree demeanor, she harbors a deep-seated resentment towards astral mages. She believes that these spirit users have had an easy life thanks to their innate powers, looking down on ordinary humans. This has fostered a strong sense of hostility and envy within her, leading to a fundamentally racist attitude towards those with magical abilities. Her personal ambition is significant, and she often declares her goal of one day becoming the First Seat of the Saint Disciples, even if she makes this claim in a joking tone.

Mai's role in the story is that of a powerful soldier for the Empire. Her motivations are driven by a desire for recognition and a strong disdain for the astral mages of the Nebulis Sovereignty, the Empire's enemy. She believes that her hard-earned strength makes her superior to those born with magical power. Her primary role in combat is as a front-line fighter who uses overwhelming firepower.

Her key relationships include her dynamic with Nameless, which is defined by her one-sided teasing and provocations. She also interacts with Risya In Empire, another Saint Disciple, whom she jokingly asks for advice on how to gain favor with the Emperor to improve her ranking. Her most significant antagonistic relationship is with astral mages like Kissing Zoa Nebulis IX, towards whom she feels a mix of hatred and jealousy, convinced they have never had to struggle for their power.

Mai possesses several notable abilities. Despite her small stature, she has incredible physical strength, capable of lifting and throwing Imperial soldiers with ease, and possesses superhuman senses, reflexes, and endurance. Her sharp instincts allow her to detect invisible presences and track incoming attacks from above. Her main weapon is a massive technological gun called the Ruined King Tempest, a heavy ship-mounted machine gun capable of firing one thousand rounds per second. This weapon can break through elemental barriers and turn invisible through optical camouflage when not in use. There are also rumors of secret true ammunition for her weapon, though details remain unknown.

The character shows signs of having undergone some form of secret Imperial technology enhancement, granting her a body that exceeds normal human limits in resistance and power. During the assault on the Imperial Palace, she fought against Kissing Zoa Nebulis IX, using her superior reflexes to dodge attacks and inflicting visible damage with her machine gun. She attempted to use her weapon's secret ammunition but was interrupted, and she later retreated when her opponent withdrew.
