Description
Grugell, also known as the Witch of the Midnight Sun, is a character who appears in the second season of the anime. She is a powerful astral mage and a member of the House of Hydra, which is one of the three royal families governing the Nebulis Sovereignty. Her title and loyalty place her as a minor antagonist within the ongoing conflict between the Empire and the witches' domain. She is depicted as a slender elderly woman, often wearing red and white garments reminiscent of a nun's habit, and in the anime adaptation, she is distinguished by a red cloak that covers her eyes.

Personality-wise, Grugell is defined by her unwavering loyalty to the Hydra Family. This allegiance is so strong that she is willing to act against the broader interests of the Nebulis Sovereignty itself if it serves her masters' goals. Despite this ruthless dedication, she maintains a level of respect for her adversaries, particularly towards Princess Sisbell Lou Nebulis IX, acknowledging the latter's royal status even as she moves to capture her. In battle, her demeanor is described as spine-chilling, and she adopts the tactics of a hunter, using her powers to corner and pursue enemies from a distance. She has a notable tendency to underestimate younger opponents, a flaw that her enemies, specifically Unit 907, are able to exploit to outsmart and defeat her.

Grugell's primary motivation stems from her duty to the Hydra Family, which drives her actions throughout the story. Her most significant role occurs during the Night of the Witch Hunt, where she joins the Hydra Family's attack on the Lou Erz Mansion. Her goal is to pursue and capture Princess Sisbell, bringing her into direct conflict with Unit 907. It is during this encounter that, despite her overwhelming power, she is tricked and defeated by the unit's tactical ingenuity. She reappears later during Unit 907's infiltration of a facility known as Snow the Sun. When a renegade named Salinger attacks the location, she has a brief confrontation with the Imperial soldier Iska, though she fails to eliminate him as he manages to escape. Her key relationships are defined by these antagonistic roles, serving as a direct threat to Princess Sisbell, Unit 907, and the Empire's protagonists.

Grugell possesses the astral power of Snow, a formidable ability that allows her to create and manipulate intense cold and frozen precipitation at will. Her power is noted for its versatility and self-sufficiency, as unlike other astral powers that require existing materials like soil, Grugell can generate snow from nothing in any environment, including indoors. She is renowned as a fearsome astral mage with a reputation for immense destructive capability, having once single-handedly annihilated an entire company of Imperial soldiers. In combat, she employs several specific techniques. She can unleash a powerful blizzard called Valley of Blizzards to overwhelm her surroundings. She can also create constructs out of snow that are resistant to standard weaponry like bullets; these include large, lumbering Snow Golems, smaller and faster Snow Soldiers, and a giant Snow Snake that can fire massive ice lances from its mouth. The very presence of her snow is dangerous, as it can absorb sound, make metal brittle from the cold, and form sharp, glass-like crystals on the ground that injure those without astral power who step on them.
