Description
Konaki Jiji, also called Crybaby Geezer or Crying Old Man, is a yōkai appearing in various media like the 1985 anime. He possesses a large baby's body topped with the face of an elderly man, featuring drooping eyebrows and a mustache. He typically wears a Kintarō apron and a mino straw raincoat. Standing 140 cm tall, his weight shifts dramatically from 25 kg to 2 tons due to his powers.

Originating in folklore, he is a mountain entity who lures travelers by mimicking infant cries. Once picked up, he clings to victims and massively increases his weight—reaching at least 188 kg and potentially hundreds of tons—to crush them. Regional legends link his cries to earthquakes or describe variants such as the one-legged Gogya-Naki or the pumpkin-transforming Konaki-Babaa. These tales stem from Tokushima and Ehime Prefectures, later popularized in modern adaptations.

A core member of the Kitarō Family and one of the 47 Yōkai Warriors representing Tokushima Prefecture, he fights alongside allies like Kitarō and Sunakake-Babaa. His relationship with Sunakake-Babaa is notably close, including instances implying romantic involvement like her displays of jealousy. This dynamic persists across seasons, though their marital status remains undefined.

Konaki Jiji's primary combat ability manipulates his density and mass. By clinging to foes and transforming his skin to stone, he pins or crushes them. This weight-shifting is complemented by stone skin durability, powerful headbutts, staff proficiency, and supplementary skills including petrifaction, earth sealing, and earthquake induction. His revival ability explains returns after apparent deaths, such as perishing against Western yōkai like Dracula in the Great Yōkai War arc.

Personality-wise, he is comical and absent-minded, exhibiting traits like chronic drowsiness and rheumatism attributed to his advanced age of 3,100 years. His fondness for sake often leads to trouble, including vulnerability to theft or deception when intoxicated. Despite these quirks, he shows resourcefulness, owning valuable possessions like a personal computer and maintaining distant human relations, such as ties to politician Deputy Prime Minister Kinkaku.

He participates in broader narratives like the Yōkai Baseball Team or Yōkai Rally as a supportive figure, often alongside Sunakake-Babaa. His legacy extends beyond the 1985 series into films, spin-offs, and crossovers such as Yo-kai Watch Shadowside, where his abilities remain consistent.
