Description
Shota Aizawa, also known as the Erasure Hero Eraser Head, serves as the homeroom teacher of Class 1-A at U.A. High School. His primary role is to train and prepare the next generation of heroes for the harsh realities of the profession, a task he approaches with a pragmatic and often severe demeanor.

Aizawa’s background is integral to understanding his character. As a student at U.A., he was close friends with Hizashi Yamada, who would become the hero Present Mic, and Oboro Shirakumo. During a work-study mission, Shirakumo was killed while saving others, a traumatic event that profoundly shaped Aizawa's worldview. This loss drove him to become an underground hero who shuns the spotlight and operates in the shadows, focusing purely on anti-villain combat. The tragedy also forged his relentless commitment to ensuring his own students are as prepared as possible, so that he might prevent similar losses.

In terms of appearance, Aizawa is a tall, slender man who looks perpetually tired and disheveled. He has long, messy black hair and often appears unshaven. His standard hero costume is a simple, tattered-looking black outfit complemented by a utility belt. His most distinctive piece of equipment is a capture weapon, a scarf-like cloth made of carbon nanofibers and steel wire alloy, which he uses for both restraining opponents and increasing his mobility. He keeps a pair of yellow goggles hidden around his neck, which he uses in combat to obscure his line of sight from enemies.

Aizawa’s personality is defined by logic and stoicism. He is a stern, reserved individual who rarely shows emotion and believes in efficiency above all else. He often appears apathetic, sleeping in a yellow sleeping bag in his classroom or hallways, and is blunt to the point of being harsh, offering criticism without regard for social niceties. However, this cold exterior masks a deep and genuine care for his students’ well-being. He employs what he calls "logical ruses," such as threatening to expel the lowest-performing student on the first day, as psychological tactics to push his class to discover their true potential. He is a workaholic, maintaining a demanding schedule of teaching, patrols, and paperwork, and is not motivated by fame or public recognition.

His primary motivation is the safety and success of his students. He is terrified of losing them to the dangers of heroism, which is the source of his strict teaching methods. He would rather be seen as a cruel, expelling taskmaster than attend a student’s funeral. He repeatedly puts his own life on the line to protect his class, most notably during the attack at the U.S.J. facility, where he single-handedly engaged a horde of villains and saved multiple students despite suffering grievous injuries.

Aizawa has several key relationships that reveal different facets of his personality. He shares a long, complex history with his loud and boisterous former classmate, Present Mic. He also has a mentor-student relationship with Hitoshi Shinso, a boy with a powerful but "villainous" Quirk whom Aizawa trains personally, seeing potential that others overlook. He becomes a primary caretaker and protector for the young girl Eri, using his Erasure Quirk to help control her dangerous Rewind ability and providing her with a stable, safe environment. His friendship with the late Oboro Shirakumo remains a defining influence, and the later revelation that Shirakumo's body was used to create the villain Kurogiri adds another layer of tragedy to his past.

Over the course of the story, Aizawa develops from a solitary hero who insists on working alone into a more collaborative figure who trusts his colleagues and students. While he remains critical and strict, he increasingly shows his faith in Class 1-A, acknowledging their growth and defending them against outside criticism. His experiences, including severe injuries sustained in battle, lead to him semi-retiring from active frontline hero work to focus entirely on his teaching, where he continues to mentor the next generation.

Aizawa possesses several notable abilities. His Quirk, Erasure, allows him to nullify another person's Quirk by looking at them. However, this power has significant drawbacks: it deactivates if he blinks or if his line of sight is blocked, and it causes severe dry eyes, requiring him to use eye drops frequently. Furthermore, it is ineffective against Mutation-type Quirks that permanently alter the user's body. To compensate for these limitations, Aizawa is an exceptionally skilled hand-to-hand combatant. He has mastered the use of his capture weapon, a skill that reportedly took him years to perfect, allowing him to bind, throw, and entangle enemies with fluid precision. His tactical intelligence and ability to remain calm and analytical under pressure make him one of the most effective pro heroes at U.A., despite his Quirk not being flashy or offensively powerful.
