Description
Kinoko Komori is a student in Class 1-B at U.A. High School's hero course, where her student number is 7. She hails from Gunma Prefecture and has a particular fondness for mushroom dishes, all types of fungi, and gothic lolita fashion. Born on December 2nd, she stands 152 centimeters tall, making her the shortest girl in her class. Her distinct physical features include a brown long bob hairstyle with bangs that often cover her eyes and pupils shaped like the cut pattern on a shiitake mushroom cap. Her hero name is Shemage, a portmanteau likely combining the name of the shimeji mushroom with the phrase "she is mage," which reflects her magic-like fighting style.
At first glance, Komori appears quiet and shy, but her personality is actually quite cheerful, lively, and mischievous. She enjoys playing pranks and has a playful, teasing side. This is reflected in her speech, as she often peppers her sentences with puns and words related to mushrooms, turning her love of fungi into a quirky verbal habit. Beneath this cute and playful exterior, however, she possesses strong tactical awareness and a willingness to use her abilities to their full potential when the situation demands it. She can be apologetic when using her more brutal techniques, showing a conflict between her kind nature and the harsh necessities of combat.
Komori's Quirk, simply named Mushroom, allows her to release and spread a wide variety of fungal spores from her body. In humid environments, these spores rapidly grow into mature mushrooms on any solid surface, including walls, the ground, and even the human body. The mushrooms she creates naturally disappear after two to three hours. This ability gives her tremendous area control, as she can blanket an entire battlefield with fungi to restrict enemy movement and obscure their vision. She also possesses expert knowledge of toxic fungi and can grow specific types with paralytic, hallucinogenic, or other debilitating effects. Her most devastating technique is called Lung Attack: Suehirotake, in which she grows mushrooms directly inside an opponent's trachea, causing severe respiratory distress and quickly incapacitating them. She has admitted to keeping this move sealed because she considers it "not cute," but will use it when victory is at stake. To aid her Quirk, Komori wields two gun-like sprayers called the Schh-Shooters; one sprays water to create a humid environment, while the other disperses her spores, allowing for faster and more widespread fungal growth. The primary weaknesses of her Quirk are a lack of humidity, which inhibits growth, and sterilization or disinfectant treatments, which can kill the spores. Additionally, her large-area attacks can easily affect her allies if they have not been pre-treated to resist the spores.
In the U.A. Sports Festival, Komori finished the obstacle course in 34th place. For the cavalry battle, she teamed up with Itsuka Kendo, Reiko Yanagi, and Setsuna Tokage, but their team was ultimately eliminated and did not advance to the final tournament. During the forest training camp arc, she was placed in critical condition when the Vanguard Action Squad attacked. Komori's most prominent role in the story occurs during the Joint Training Battle between Class A and Class B. She was a member of the second-round team, facing off against Fumikage Tokoyami, Momo Yaoyorozu, Toru Hagakure, and Yuga Aoyama. In this match, she successfully used her Quirk to hinder the invisible Hagakure and, after being struck by Tokoyami, retaliated by growing mushrooms in his windpipe, effectively removing him from the fight and securing victory for her team. After the match, she showed her kind side by apologizing to Tokoyami and offering him a throat lozenge to ease his pain, though he initially rejected her pity. They later bonded, with Komori asking him for private photos of his hero mentor, Hawks.
During the Paranormal Liberation War arc, Komori was deployed to the front lines of the raid on the Gunga Mountain Villa. There, she used her Quirk on a large scale, growing mushrooms on the bodies and in the throats of numerous villains to give the heroes an advantage. In the final war against All For One, she was again sent to the Gunga Mountain ruins. However, when Dabi’s intense flames spread across the battlefield, her spores were burned away, rendering her Quirk ineffective and forcing her to retreat with Kamui Woods. Following the final war, a time skip of approximately eight years reveals that Komori has graduated from U.A. High School and become a professional hero. In this epilogue, she has also entered a romantic relationship with her former classmate Shihai Kuroiro, who had harbored a crush on her during their school days.
