Description
Chiya Hazuki is a young girl who holds the important position of a shrine maiden from the Laurel Federation. From birth, she was raised and trained intensively to fulfill this role, which has resulted in her possessing remarkably high-level magical abilities for her age, particularly in the creation of powerful defensive barriers and the use of healing magic, skills potent enough to be effective even on a battlefield. While she is treated as a national symbol, she is acutely aware that she is often regarded as nothing more than a ceremonial decoration, a political figurehead rather than a person with real influence. This awareness fosters a deep sense of dissatisfaction and frustration within her, as she struggles with the limitations placed upon her despite her capabilities.
Her personality is a mix of seriousness, determination, and a deep-seated desire to be more than a mere symbol. She demonstrates strong discipline and a sense of responsibility, understanding that her careless actions could tarnish the honor of her nation, and she is earnest enough to properly apologize when she has been rude. Despite her frustration, she can be impulsive, as shown when she cut off her own hair to join the hero Hibiki's party after being rescued by them. Her loyalty to Hibiki Otonashi is a core part of her character; she adores Hibiki like an older sister, calling her "Hibiki-oneechan," and this admiration is the primary driver of her decision to leave her homeland and actively participate in battlefields across the Kingdom of Limia.
Chiya possesses a unique and rare ability known as the Mind's Eye, which allows her to perceive the essential nature or true essence of things and people. However, this ability is not easily controlled; after it first awakens, she struggles to accurately analyze the overwhelming information she receives. This ability leads to a terrifying experience upon meeting the protagonist Makoto Misumi. Her Mind's Eye reveals that Makoto's companion, Mio, is actually the feared Calamity Black Spider from a past battle. More disturbingly, she perceives Makoto's inner nature as something profoundly wrong, a featureless white figure wielding a large, beautiful bow, a vision that frightens her so much she screams and faints. After this incident, she strongly warns Hibiki to neither fight nor befriend Makoto, believing he is not a good person to associate with.
She later apologizes to Makoto for her reaction and pleads with him to keep the details of her vision private. This marks the beginning of a complex shift in their relationship. During an investigation of the cursed land known as Nightfrontal alongside Makoto, Mio, and Lime, she witnesses him summon the highest spirits of earth and fire, the Behemoth and Phoenix, without the need for any sacrifice—a feat that normally requires a shrine maiden's life and years of national preparation. Despite feeling a sense of unfairness at the ease of his power, her own deep reverence and faith towards spirits impress these beings, and she inadvertently receives their blessings, gaining the protection of the three highest spirits of water, earth, and fire.
Through these events, Chiya undergoes significant personal development. She learns of a dark chapter in her own country's history, the rejection of a Japanese family which led to tragedy and the creation of the lich Nebiros. Witnessing Makoto purify Nebiros and return the cursed land to its original state as Chateau Yui forces her to question the official teachings of the Laurel Federation and resolve to research its true history on her own. She comes to realize that Makoto and his company are not merely a threat to the world and regrets being overly swayed by what only she could see with her Mind's Eye. Reflecting on a conversation with another character, Yui, who questioned if Makoto was even human, Chiya decides she will help him as much as she can on the difficult path she is sure he will walk. This marks her evolution from a girl paralyzed by fear and political frustration to one who seeks her own truth and purpose. Her notable abilities evolve from her initial mastery of barriers and healing to include the more controlled use of her Mind's Eye and the unprecedented bestowal of blessings from three of the most powerful elemental spirits.
