Description
Gaburn, whose name is more accurately rendered as Gaburoon, is a large robot that appears in the sixth layer of the Abyss, a region known as the Capital of the Unreturned. Gaburoon is an Interference Unit, a type of autonomous machine whose original purpose was to observe the environment and interact with its inhabitants to gather knowledge. Unlike many other relics and creatures of the Abyss, Gaburoon possesses a calm, patient, and deeply loyal personality, capable of independent thought and complex emotion. The character is often referred to with neutral pronouns, reflecting its nature as a mechanical being, though it demonstrates a distinctly paternal and protective presence.
Gaburoon's background is rooted in its original mission, but its existence takes on new meaning after meeting Faputa. Discovered by Faputa long ago, Gaburoon was found in a state of severe disrepair, immobilized and unable to fulfill its original function. Despite this, the two formed a powerful bond. Gaburoon taught Faputa the language of the Abyss, including its pictograms and glyphs, and explained abstract concepts such as value. In return, Faputa brought Gaburoon materials to repair its body. The act of naming was particularly significant between them; Faputa received her name from Gaburoon, while she bestowed the name Gaburoon upon the robot, a title in the abyssal language that means Queen's Guardian, formalizing its role as her protector and companion.
The character's primary motivation is the protection and future well-being of Faputa. Gaburoon acts as a steadfast guardian, advisor, and confidant to her. Within the story's Ilblu arc, Gaburoon assists Faputa in her complex and often hidden agenda regarding the Village of Iruburu and the party of delvers led by Riko. For instance, Gaburoon helps Faputa secretly guide Riko and her friends through the perilous sixth layer and later offers to take Prushka's stone into the village to be fashioned into a protective talisman. Gaburoon acts as a grounding presence for the impulsive and emotionally driven Faputa, often offering pragmatic advice, such as suggesting it would be easier for Faputa to simply speak to the delvers directly rather than relying on cryptic gestures.
Gaburoon shares key relationships with the main cast, particularly with the robot Reg. Upon meeting Reg, Gaburoon notes the similarity in their natures, and the two speculate that they may even share a common creator. In the past, Reg once protected Gaburoon from a Turbinid-Dragon while the Interference Unit was damaged, forging an early connection. This history adds depth to their later interactions, as Gaburoon warns Reg not to stay too long in the village and later saves him from another attack. However, Gaburoon's most profound relationship is undoubtedly with Faputa, a bond so strong that Gaburoon confesses that the days they spent together were its most precious Haku, a word for an irreplaceable treasure.
Over the course of the narrative, Gaburoon undergoes a significant and poignant development, culminating in a selfless sacrifice. When a distraught Faputa, angry at Reg's memory loss, turns her fury towards Riko, Gaburoon intervenes and blocks the attack. This action causes its own body to be shattered and rendered dysfunctional. Gaburoon explains that it acted to protect Faputa's future, understanding that harming Riko would cause Faputa to lose Reg forever. Even when partially destroyed, Gaburoon continues to fight, trying to protect Faputa from the creatures invading the village. In its final moments, crushed by a Turbinid-Dragon, Gaburoon apologizes for no longer being able to protect her, expressing deep regret that it will not live to see how Faputa, a being born of vengeance, came to find something irreplaceable.
In terms of notable abilities, Gaburoon has several features typical of advanced Abyssal robotics. Like Reg, Gaburoon possesses extendable arms, with its right arm capable of stretching to an unknown length. It also has an integrated weapon system housed in its right arm, which functions similarly to a pump-action shotgun that needs to be manually reloaded; the force of this weapon is sufficient to fling large creatures great distances. Beyond its physical capabilities, Gaburoon also holds extensive knowledge, having taught Faputa the complex writing systems of the Abyss, including Pictograms, Nether Glyphs, and Beyond Glyphs.
