Description
Ilmyui is a pivotal character from the second season of Made in Abyss, whose tragic history is central to the foundation of the Village of Iruburu. She is a native girl of the Abyss with distinctive light blonde or silver hair, yellow eyes, and brown skin. Her background is one of profound rejection; she was banished from her tribe, the Abyss Tribe that lived within the rim of the Abyss, because she was deemed infertile. In her culture, the ability to bear many children was highly valued, and her infertility was considered a curse or a defect, leading her family and community to abandon her.

Initially, Ilmyui is a very shy and wary child, a direct result of her traumatic upbringing. She is cautious of strangers but, once her trust is earned, she reveals a more playful and affectionate side. One of her notable tics is making a soft "Sha-aan" sound when she is afraid or surprised. After being abandoned, she joined the Ganja Suicide Corps, a group of explorers searching for a golden paradise. She was reluctantly accepted as a local guide after Vueko, a member of the Corps, pleaded for her to stay.

Her primary motivation is a deep-seated desire for love, belonging, and motherhood. Having been cast out for her inability to have children, she yearns to form a family. She finds a surrogate mother in Vueko, bonding with her over their shared experiences of suffering and rejection. Vueko, who also felt broken and infertile due to past trauma, reciprocates this maternal love, and the two develop an unbreakable, mother-daughter relationship. This bond becomes the anchor for Ilmyui's sanity and will to live.

Ilmyui's role in the story is that of a tragic sacrifice whose wish becomes the distorted foundation for the Ganja Corps' salvation. After the Corps descends to the sixth layer, they are struck by a deadly parasitic disease from the "pseudowater." As Ilmyui lay dying from the illness, Vueko, in a desperate attempt to save her, gave her a mysterious artifact called the "Cradle of Desire," which is said to grant wishes. The Cradle saved her life but began to twist her body and her deepest wish for children in a horrifying manner.

Her body started to mutate, and she began to give birth to strange, short-lived creatures through a hole in her chest. These creatures lacked mouths and digestive systems, causing them to die within a day. The leader of the Ganja Corps, Wazukyan, exploited this tragic turn of events. He used Ilmyui's dying children as food and medicine for the other sick members of the group, with their flesh having a curative effect. As Ilmyui continued to give birth and her body grew to an enormous size, she lost her human form and the ability to speak, becoming a massive, white, pillar-like biological structure.

Her development is a descent from a hopeful but scared child into a silent, god-like entity consumed by her own distorted wish. She stopped reacting as her children were taken from her. The Corps began to worship her as their "Queen". In a final, manipulative act, Wazukyan implanted a second Cradle of Desire into her body, overriding her original wish with his own desire to create a permanent home. This fusion transformed Ilmyui into the very fabric of Iruburu, a village of Narehate that is immune to the Abyss's curse.

Her key relationship is with Vueko, whose presence remains the sole anchor for her fading consciousness. Wazukyan recognized this and imprisoned Vueko within Ilmyui's body to ensure the village's stability, as Ilmyui's will to live was tied to Vueko's presence. Another significant relationship is with her final child, Faputa. Using the combined power of two Cradles of Desire given to her and a third held by Wazukyan, Ilmyui gave birth one last time, producing Faputa outside of the village structure. Faputa is not just a daughter but the embodiment of Ilmyui's accumulated hatred and resentment towards the villagers who exploited her and her children.

Ilmyui's notable abilities are entirely tied to the wish-granting power of the Cradles of Desire. Her primary ability became the generation and birth of living creatures, which she used to produce her short-lived children. Ultimately, her final and most profound ability was to sacrifice her own humanity to become Iruburu itself, a massive, living ecosystem that houses and protects its inhabitants and alters their physical forms into Narehate based on their value.
