Description
Maa, also spelled Maaa, is a character who appears in the second season of the anime Made in Abyss, subtitled The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, which adapts the story arc set in the village of Ilblu on the sixth layer of the Abyss. She is a small, artificial being created by the village itself, not a true narehate born from a human. Her name comes from the only syllable she can utter, given to her by the protagonist Riko.

Maa has a distinctive and ghostlike appearance. Her body is round and covered in pink fur, with fabric-like folds at the bottom that she uses to move. She has two tentacle-like arms, a split mouth like a cat with a single large central tooth, and small, beady eyes that often well up with tears. She is frequently pictured drooling. A patch of darker fur over her left eye marks where her body was torn during the village's balancing ritual, a testament to her resilience. Despite her somewhat whimsical look, Maa possesses a flexible body that can change in height and store small objects within the folds of her form.

Her personality is gentle, docile, and deeply loyal. She demonstrates an innocent and childlike nature, often appearing passive and responsive to the actions of others. She forms a strong emotional bond with Riko and Meinya, showing affection and a protective instinct. Though she cannot speak beyond her own name, her actions convey a clear desire to help and stay close to those she cares about. Her loyalty leads her to act as a guardian for Riko during the dangerous events that unfold in Ilblu.

Maa's primary role in the story is as a supporting character who accompanies Riko, Reg, and Nanachi during their time in the village. She becomes an important witness to the tragedy of Ilblu and the conflict between its inhabitants and Faputa. Her most notable abilities include remarkable regenerative capacity—her body can heal from serious wounds, though the new fur grows in a darker shade—and considerable physical strength, enough to carry or hold other characters. She also has the ability to store items in her body's folds, acting as a living container. However, she cannot survive outside the boundaries of Ilblu, as her existence is intrinsically tied to the village's artificial environment.

Development for Maa is tied to her growing attachment to Riko. Initially just another mysterious inhabitant of the village, she gradually takes on a more active role, pushing past her own fear to protect Riko during the balancing ceremony and other crises. Her ultimate fate is a tragic one: she perishes alongside the destruction of Ilblu, choosing to remain with the village rather than leave. This self-sacrifice underscores her deep connection to her home and the people within it. Her story serves as a quiet but poignant reflection of innocence and resilience in a harsh and unforgiving world.
