Description
Beatrix is an ancient and tremendously skilled elven swordswoman, known throughout the world by the titles of the War Goddess or the Goddess of War. As the first champion of the Bushin Festival, her legendary status precedes her, yet she has been absent from the public eye for over a decade. Despite being more than one hundred years old, she possesses the youthful appearance of a woman in her early twenties, a trait common to the long-lived elf race. She is noted for her great beauty, with long platinum hair and blue eyes, and bears a striking resemblance to Alpha, a connection that has led to speculation that she is Alpha's long-lost aunt. Her typical attire is bold and revealing, consisting of a grey tattered robe over a white bikini top and black skirt, though she will wear a coat when in public, indicating an awareness of social norms despite her lack of modesty.
In terms of personality, Beatrix is characterized by her straightforward, natural, and unpretentious nature. She does not seek fame or ostentation, which often leads others to underestimate her true power until her identity is known. While generally polite, she can be socially awkward and tactless, sometimes speaking her thoughts aloud without a filter. This bluntness can make her appear aloof or stoic, but she is fundamentally kind and friendly toward those she likes. She possesses a certain innocent or naive quality, as demonstrated when she fails to realize that her face is hidden while asking someone if they know an elf who looks like her. Despite her immense power, she has a well-known fondness for hamburgers, often buying and carrying a large quantity of them.
Beatrix is driven by two primary motivations. The first and most personal is her quest to find her niece, the daughter of her deceased sister, who is said to look very much like her. This search has consumed her for many years and is the reason for her travels. Her second major motivation is the pursuit of a worthy opponent. Having reached a plateau in her own development as a swordswoman, she feels a strong attraction to facing powerful foes, seeking a duel that can help her break past her current limits.
Within the story, Beatrix makes her return to the royal capital of Midgar as a guest of honor at the Bushin Festival. Her primary role during this arc is as a formidable outsider who recognizes true strength. She takes an immediate interest in Cid Kagenou, correctly perceiving the immense potential hidden behind his facade of mediocrity. Her role escalates dramatically after the tournament, when Shadow reveals himself. While others see him as a threat, Beatrix answers a call for help not out of allegiance, but purely for the chance to cross blades with him. She engages Shadow in a brief but intense duel, initially holding her own against his stylized, holding-back attacks and proving herself one of the few capable of perceiving the depth of his purely skill-based swordsmanship.
Key relationships define her journey. Her most significant connection is the one she seeks: her missing niece, strongly implied to be Alpha, the leader of Shadow Garden. Her relationship with Cid Kagenou is also notable; she instinctively recognizes his potential and later develops a strong fondness for him, with some game scenarios suggesting she becomes surprisingly affectionate, even expressing a desire to have a child with him to see how strong it would be. She also forms a temporary alliance with Princess Iris Midgar against Shadow, treating her with respect as a fellow warrior.
Beatrix undergoes subtle but significant development. Initially, she is a legendary figure who has grown stagnant, lamenting the lack of rivals who can push her to improve. Her confrontation with Shadow serves as a profound awakening. Though she and Iris are ultimately defeated, Beatrix is unique in understanding that Shadow was fighting without magic, relying solely on unparalleled swordsmanship. This realization that there is a higher level of skill to attain inspires her to set out on a new journey of training, hoping to break past her stagnation and continue growing as a swordswoman.
Beatrix's notable abilities are immense. She is hailed as one of the strongest swordswomen in the world, with her swordsmanship described as the pinnacle of the art. Her physical prowess, including speed and strength, is on a level that allows her to briefly match a holding-back Shadow, with her movements being imperceptible to a normal person. She possesses a century of combat experience, granting her the ability to read her opponents' movements and adapt quickly in battle. Her senses, particularly her sense of smell, are exceptionally sharp, potentially rivaling those of therianthropes. However, while her sword skills are near the level of Shadow Garden's members, her magical ability is noted to be less refined, relying primarily on magic for self-enhancement rather than complex spells. Her primary weapon is a longsword, though its design varies between a double-edged blade in the novels and a single-edged, katana-like blade in the anime, where her style incorporates iaijutsu, the art of quick drawing.
