Description
Haruto Sugiyama is a third-year student at Ichigo Junior High, where he holds the prominent positions of both the boys' tennis club president and the student council president. Known throughout the school for his maturity, a strong sense of responsibility, and athletic skill, he is widely admired by his peers and even has his own fan club among the student body. He is a cool and stylish boy with the appearance of a bishounen, characterized by his short black hair and purple eyes.
A key aspect of Haruto's background and internal conflict is his relationship with his younger brother, Akihito Sugiyama, who lives in America and possesses an extraordinarily high IQ of 250. Despite his many accomplishments at school, Haruto harbors deep-seated feelings of inadequacy and inferiority when comparing himself to his prodigy brother. This personal struggle makes him vulnerable, a weakness that is exploited by the Queen of Nightmares in the first season. Under her manipulation, his jealousy and insecurity about Akihito are used to align him temporarily as an antagonist to the main protagonists. During this period, he enters a Dream Partnership with Yuni, a stuffed kitten who was originally a servant of the Queen of Nightmares.
In Mewkledreamy Mix!, Haruto's character undergoes significant development. Freed from the Queen of Nightmares's control through the intervention of his partner Yuni and the main characters, he is able to confront and ultimately overcome his long-held inferiority complex regarding his brother. Later in this season, he works alongside his brother Akihito and another character named Ritsu Imai under the name Samsharr, where he operates under the alias De Charr Haruru. Flashbacks to his childhood illustrate the early contrasts drawn between him and his brother, which foreshadowed his later susceptibility to outside manipulation. To further aid Akihito, the main antagonist of Mix!, Akumu, asks Haruto to join her side.
Throughout the series, Haruto's relationships with those around him are defining aspects of his school life. His status as an admired senior is consistently shown, even during his time as an antagonist. He shares a close, respectful senior-junior relationship with Asahi Minamikawa, a member of the tennis club. He is also a classmate and has a childhood friendship with Yuri Sawamura. Yume Hinata, the main protagonist, has a crush on him. Haruto's image colors are sky blue and indigo.
