Description
Futari Gotoh is a supporting character from the anime and manga series Bocchi the Rock!. She is the younger sister of the protagonist, Hitori Gotoh, and the second daughter of Naoki and Michiyo Gotoh. At the age of five, Futari is a bright and energetic child whose personality stands in stark contrast to her older sister's extreme introversion and social anxiety. Physically, she has pink hair and blue eyes, and her hairstyle features distinctive cowlicks, or ahoge, on both sides of her head, mirroring the single cowlick her sister has. Her birthday is July 7th, and her blood type is A.
Futari's most defining trait is her outgoing and unfiltered nature. She is fearless when interacting with strangers and approaches new people, such as the members of Hitori's band Kessoku Band, with immediate ease and friendliness. This directness, common for a child her age, often leads to brutally honest comments. She frequently says things that unintentionally wound her older sister, such as pointing out Hitori's lack of friends or stating that the family pet, a dog named Jimihen, ranks higher than Hitori in the household hierarchy. Despite these harsh remarks, her intentions are not malicious; rather, they stem from a childlike innocence and a lack of filter between her thoughts and words. Underneath her teasing, Futari demonstrates a genuine, if sometimes unspoken, affection for her sister, admiring her and asking to be taught how to play the guitar.
In the story, Futari's primary role is to provide domestic comic relief and to highlight Hitori's unusual behavior through the eyes of a typical, social child. She is frequently seen in scenes set in the Gotoh household, where she observes and comments on Hitori's eccentricities. She is also a sharp observer of her sister's social struggles; at one point, she wonders aloud if Hitori acts the same way at school, showing an unexpected level of awareness and concern for someone so young. When she finally meets Ikuyo Kita and Nijika Ijichi, Hitori's bandmates, she expresses sincere relief that her sister has real friends. Her main relationships are with her immediate family, including her parents, but she forms a quick and enthusiastic bond with Hitori's friends, particularly the equally extroverted Ikuyo Kita. She also shares a close bond with the family dog, Jimihen, who she often plays with and seems to hold in especially high regard.
Futari experiences a small but notable moment of development after attending one of Hitori's concerts. Witnessing her sister perform successfully inspires her to ask Hitori to play the guitar for her at home, indicating a moment of admiration for her older sister's talent. However, like many children her age, her interest is fleeting, and she quickly loses focus. Aside from her uninhibited social skills, she does not display any specialized talents or abilities, though a recurring fantasy of Hitori's imagines a future where Futari has grown up to become a wife and mother, demonstrating a full and successful social life that starkly contrasts with her sister's fears for her own future. In the anime adaptation, she was also given the role of narrator for a recap episode, increasing her presence beyond the main story.
