Description
Masha, originally designated R2000, is a small robotic companion in Tokyo Mew Mew New. He was created by Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka as part of the same project that produced the Mew Mew team, and he was given to Ichigo Momomiya to support her work. Ichigo nicknamed him Masha after her crush Masaya Aoyama, and Masha came to embrace the name and the connection it created between them.
In appearance, Masha is a round, furry, pink creature small enough to be held in one hand. He has pink cat ears, red wings, a red fluffy tail, and large pink eyes, and he always appears to be blushing. In Tokyo Mew Mew New, one small redesign gives his tail a red heart-shaped tip, distinguishing this version of the character.
Masha has a simple and affectionate personality. He was not originally built with a complex personality program, and he mostly communicates through short sounds such as "pi" and "tweet," with occasional short words. Despite his limited speech, he clearly expresses devotion to Ichigo and a strong desire to protect her and help the Mew Mews. He is also notably brave; in one situation he endured interrogation by the alien Pie rather than reveal the team's data, putting himself at risk to protect them.
His primary motivation is to support Ichigo and the Mew Mews in their fight against the Chimera Anima. He serves as a communication link between the girls and their creators, detects the presence of Chimera Anima and Mew Aqua, and can transform into a cell phone strap so Ichigo can carry him discreetly. After a Chimera Anima is defeated, Masha consumes the jellyfish-like parasites that emerge from infected hosts. He can also merge with Mew Aqua to form the Mew Aqua Rod, which enables the Mew Mews to perform the healing attack Ribbon Aqua Drops.
Over the course of the story, Masha develops noticeably. He becomes more capable of speech, which gives him additional personality and strengthens his bond with the team, and he grows increasingly willing to put himself in danger during battles. When the alien threat is resolved, he chooses to stay with Ichigo as she moves forward with her life, reflecting the closeness that developed between them.
His key relationship is with Ichigo, who named him and with whom he is almost always present. He also shares bonds with his creators, Ryou and Keiichiro, and with Ucha, the second robot created after him.
