Description
Yamada Asaemon Genji is a supporting character in Hell's Paradise, recognized as the eighth-ranked member of the Yamada clan, a group of ronin who serve the shogunate as executioners and sword testers. His background is that of a dedicated swordsman who, as part of the shogun's expedition, is assigned to the island of Kotaku to monitor the criminal Moro Makiya in the search for the Elixir of Life.
Genji is a tall and muscular man with pale brown or dark skin, short black hair marked by distinctive white stripes, thick eyebrows, and blue eyes. He wears the standard white uniform of his clan, though he replaces the typical sleeve straps with chains that wrap around his shoulders. Despite his intimidating and serious appearance, his personality is multifaceted. He is a strict adherent to the samurai code of bushido, believing fervently that a swordsman's soul is contained within his blade. This traditionalist mindset initially makes him a harsh critic of female samurai, and he explicitly voices his opposition to women like Sagiri following the warrior's path, arguing their destiny lies elsewhere, such as becoming the wife of the clan head.
However, beneath this rigid exterior lies a man who is more vulnerable than he appears. Genji has a known weakness for women, a trait that fellow clan members are aware of. This flaw is most evident in his interactions with the kunoichi Yuzuriha, whose charms he easily falls for after his assigned criminal is killed. Rather than returning to the mainland as protocol dictates, he concocts the excuse that Yuzuriha is too dangerous to be supervised by a single Asaemon and insists on staying to guard her himself. He is also a slow learner who struggled with calligraphy, yet he showed great determination and gratitude by spending a year learning to write a heartfelt letter to a woman he admired, which he then bravely read aloud in public.
Genji's primary role in the story is as a member of the expedition's preliminary landing party. After his charge is killed, he joins the group consisting of Sagiri, Gabimaru, Senta, and Yuzuriha. His key relationships are defined by his internal conflicts. With Sagiri, he is a foil, representing the traditional, patriarchal views of the Yamada clan that she struggles against. He repeatedly tries to convince her to leave the island, believing her skills are inferior and unsuited for the dangers of Kotaku. With Yuzuriha, his relationship is one of easy manipulation, as she uses his infatuation to her advantage. He also shares a bond of friendship with a fellow Asaemon named Kisho, having joined the clan at the same time, and he holds deep respect for the higher-ranked Asaemon, Shugen, who taught him calligraphy.
His character undergoes a significant and final development following a confrontation with the monstrous Rokurota. After Genji is gravely wounded while pushing Sagiri out of harm's way, he lies on the verge of death. In this moment, Sagiri refuses to flee, declaring that she does not care whether she acts as a man or a woman, only that she can support her comrade. This declaration finally allows Genji to understand her conviction. His perception of her changes completely, and he passes on his sword to her as his last dying wish, entrusting her with the task of slaying Rokurota and finally accepting her as a true samurai.
In terms of notable abilities, Genji is ranked eighth, making him one of the strongest members of his clan and a candidate to become the next head. His most prominent asset is his monstrous physical strength, a power so great that his peer Shugen can imitate it to defeat the physically powerful Tamiya Gantetsusai. As a master of the clan's Tameshi Itto-ryu swordsmanship style, he has the precise knowledge of human anatomy required to decapitate a person with a single, clean cut. His swordsmanship is further enhanced by his immense wrist strength, allowing him to overpower opponents in a direct clash of blades. This level of skill is sufficient for him to behead the monstrous Soshin, the supernatural guardians of the island, with a single stroke.
