Description
Ju Fa is a major antagonist in Hell's Paradise and a member of Lord Tensen, the group of immortal beings ruling over the mysterious island of Kotaku. Known by the moniker Great Emperor Akshobhya, Ju Fa is one of the seven masters of the island and holds partial authority over its events and inhabitants. Within the Lord Tensen hierarchy, Ju Fa is often seen alongside Tao Fa, with the two forming a unique pair that contrasts with the other members.

Ju Fa possesses a striking appearance, typically taking a masculine form with shoulder-length blond hair, blond irises, and matching eyebrows and eyelashes. His attire consists of a white hakama with a dark obi, a pale yellow haori, and a golden flower amulet on a beaded necklace, complemented by dark hanfu, boots, and an obi. As a Tensen, Ju Fa is genderfluid and capable of switching between yin and yang forms, which also changes his physical sex characteristics to match the chosen chi.

In terms of personality, Ju Fa is defined by his fierce loyalty and deep caring nature toward his partner Tao Fa, with whom he shares a bond spanning centuries. Their relationship transcends simple categorization, blending aspects of sibling connection and romantic partnership into something unique to their existence. Outside of his devotion to Tao Fa, Ju Fa displays an aggressive and hostile demeanor toward almost everyone else, particularly humans. He despises humanity with particular intensity, viewing them as little more than livestock or a resource to be used for the Tensen's purposes. He becomes irritated whenever humans manage to challenge or outmatch his abilities, reflecting a deep-seated pride in his own divine status.

The origins of Ju Fa trace back approximately one thousand years, when he and the other Tensen were created as artificial beings, essentially Tao puppets brought into existence through the research of Rien and Jofuku. From their earliest days, Ju Fa and Tao Fa were noted as being different from the other Tensen, displaying care and concern for one another that their peers lacked. Rien forced their bodies to mature and compelled them to perform training in Bochu Jutsu, a form of intimate Tao practice meant to refine their abilities and grant immortality. Over centuries, the Tensen used the Hoko inhabitants of the island as resources to replenish their Tao, though Ju Fa and Tao Fa initially resisted, attempting to subsist on only fruit instead. Eventually, Ju Fa convinced himself and Tao Fa that using humans for their objectives was acceptable, marking a turning point in their moral descent.

As for his role in the story, Ju Fa serves as one of the primary obstacles facing the human expedition sent to retrieve the Elixir of Life. He frequently acts as an observer and enforcer, at one point monitoring the Aza brothers and demonstrating his overwhelming power by easily defeating them. His fire-attribute Tao grants him god-like mastery over his abilities, honed through a millennium of training. His role becomes increasingly central as the narrative progresses, particularly when he must confront the human intruders directly.

The key relationship in Ju Fa's existence is his bond with Tao Fa. The two were created as two halves of a whole, and their connection forms the emotional core of their characters. Ju Fa cannot bear to see Tao Fa damaged, even though her regeneration abilities would allow her to recover, and his protective instincts drive many of his actions. This relationship serves as both his greatest strength and his ultimate vulnerability. In contrast, Ju Fa has no meaningful positive relationships with other characters. He views the other Tensen with varying degrees of tolerance but ultimately follows Rien's leadership, even as he recognizes that their environment has driven many of his peers to madness. His hatred of humans is absolute, and he treats all expedition members as enemies to be eliminated or used.

Ju Fa undergoes notable development throughout the series, particularly as his backstory is revealed. Initially presented as a cold, inhuman antagonist, deeper exploration shows that Ju Fa was not always the monster he became. He and Tao Fa were once reluctant participants in the Tensen's methods, questioning the morality of using other beings for survival and noticing that their peers seemed insane rather than accepting that they themselves were the problem. This questioning, however, was not strong enough to overcome their circumstances, and they ultimately surrendered to the path set before them. Ju Fa's tragic arc shows how even beings with some capacity for empathy can be corrupted by their environment and the desperate pursuit of immortality.

Ju Fa possesses numerous notable abilities. As a Tensen, he has complete mastery over fire-attribute Tao, allowing him to sense opponents, detect weak spots, enhance his physical attacks, and launch invisible projectiles that cause internal damage. His signature techniques include Toate, a distant strike using Tao projectiles, and Senjutsu Suzusashi, which creates multiple Tao orbs that rain down on opponents. He also possesses the Flower Tao regenerative ability, granting him near-invincibility by allowing him to instantly regenerate from wounds including decapitation. His regeneration can only be truly countered by water-attribute Tao users who can destroy the plant ovule within his tanden. Ju Fa is also capable of switching between yin and yang forms to augment his Tao and recover lost energy. His ultimate ability is the Kishikai transformation, though unlike other Tensen, Ju Fa must fuse with Tao Fa to enter this state. Their fused form creates a twisted, winged creature capable of flight, releasing devastating shrieks, launching vines as projectiles, and scattering hallucinogenic spores that induce uncontrollable laughter in victims. However, this transformation can only be maintained for approximately thirty minutes before both are reduced to their weakened states.
