Description
Yamada Asaemon Kishō is a character from the anime Hell's Paradise, serving as a member of the Yamada Asaemon executioner clan. He holds the rank of the eleventh Asaemon, a position that recognizes him as one of the clan's strongest and most skilled swordsmen, making him a suitable candidate to potentially become the next head of the family.
In terms of appearance, Kishō has short hair with bangs framing his face. He wears a dark haori over the standard Asaemon attire, which consists of a white robe with a bell tied on the left collar, a hakama held with a waist cord, and sandals.
Kishō's personality is defined by his remarkable composure, as he is known for never losing his cool and rarely acting assertive. He is a pragmatic individual who can see the bigger picture in any situation and becomes annoyed when others question his methods for handling matters. He has no issue taking the easy way out, demonstrated when he offers to kill the criminal Gabimaru to allow a fellow Asaemon, Sagiri, to return home safely rather than continue the dangerous mission. Kishō lacks ambition entirely; he does not care who becomes the next head of the Yamada Clan and feels no interest in competing with his fellow clansmen. He is also flexible regarding rules, as shown when he allows his assigned criminal, Warped Keiun, to keep his arms unbound. Despite this flexibility, he holds a low opinion of criminals, considering them undeserving of argument, and he is not easily pushed around by others.
Kishō joins the expedition to the island of Kotaku as one of the Asaemon monitors, assigned to keep watch over the criminal Warped Keiun. His primary role is to supervise his charge in the search for the Elixir of Life, which would grant a pardon for past crimes. However, shortly after arriving on the island, his criminal attacks Gabimaru and is killed in the ensuing fight. With his charge dead, Kishō prepares to return home, but not before offering to kill Gabimaru for Sagiri. He warns her that the criminals have their own plans and that the mission's rules ultimately do not matter.
His key relationships include his association with Sagiri, a fellow Asaemon, whom he tries to help by offering an early exit from the mission. He also has a brief but significant encounter with the criminal Gabimaru. When Kishō offers to kill him, Gabimaru silences him by grabbing his sword. Rather than reacting with anger, Kishō smiles and reveals crucial information: the shogun has plans to involve people from Gabimaru's former village, Iwagakure, if the search for the elixir takes too long.
Kishō's development is cut short due to his fate on the island. After departing from the group, he somehow becomes infected with a condition known as Arborification, which rapidly transforms him into a plant-like, blooming corpse. Later, another group finds his remains, and the dead Asaemon is split in half by a large tentacle from a monstrous island creature called Watatsumi.
Regarding his notable abilities, as the eleventh ranked Asaemon, Kishō is a highly capable swordsman. More specifically, he possesses what is described as "nerves of steel," a disposition that allows him to predict an opponent's attacks and avoid them in time. This feat is notable because it is typically something that would require the use of Tao, a supernatural energy system within the world of Hell's Paradise.
