Description
Gleipnir, also known as Nir, is a character from the anime Sacrificial Princess & the King of Beasts. He is a wolf-like beast with black fur, a brown muzzle and chest, and blank white eyes. A large scar marks his left eye, giving him a distinct and somewhat severe appearance. His name, as explained by another character, is that of a special tether once used to chain the ancestors of the Phantom Wolf tribe.
Gleipnir serves as the right-hand man and most trusted subordinate to Fenrir, the leader of the anti-monarchy organization known as the Fall Phantom Wolf Army. The bond between Gleipnir and Fenrir is the core of his identity. He was originally a slave known only as number 36-2 at a market. Fenrir saved him from this life and gave him the name Gleipnir, an act of kindness that inspired absolute loyalty. The depth of their connection is illustrated in a flashback where a young Fenrir, after losing his ear and being disowned, angrily tries to push Gleipnir away. In response, Gleipnir attempted to cut off his own ear to offer to Fenrir, but Fenrir stopped him, and Gleipnir instead wounded his own eye, begging to remain by Fenrir's side. This event is the origin of his distinctive scar.
Gleipnir is defined by his unwavering devotion. He follows Fenrir's orders without question and his primary motivation is to support his master's goal of overthrowing King Leonhart and becoming the new King of Beasts. His personality is quiet and dutiful, serving as a direct contrast to Fenrir's more volatile ambition. He does not appear to have personal aspirations beyond fulfilling his role as Fenrir's sword and shield.
In the story, Gleipnir acts as the primary enforcer for the Fall Phantom Wolf Army. He possesses a notable magical ability that allows him to telekinetically control his short swords with great precision. He employs this power in combat, successfully repelling attacks from characters like Lanteveldt and even wounding his own master, Fenrir, when ordered to do so in a plan to capture Sariphi. His role is that of a formidable secondary antagonist, directly supporting the main villain's schemes.
The development of his character is tragic and narrowly focused. His entire existence is tethered to Fenrir. The author has stated that Gleipnir was created later as a partner for Fenrir after the villain's character was initially developed, which accounts for their deeply intertwined natures. This culminates in his final act. After Fenrir is mortally wounded in a duel with King Leonhart, Gleipnir follows a standing order from his master: to kill Fenrir if he lost the fight. He stabs Fenrir in the back and escapes with his body, leaving him with no purpose, as Fenrir was his only reason for living.
