Description
Abuto is a prominent character known for his role as the vice-captain of the seventh division of the Harusame space pirates. He is a member of the Yato tribe, a race famed for their immense physical prowess and combative nature. Standing at 186 centimeters tall and weighing 82 kilograms, Abuto has a tall, robust stature and a mature, somewhat weary appearance that belies his actual age of 32. He has ash-brown hair and typically wears a dark grey combat uniform with a black cloak.

In terms of personality, Abuto is considerably more laid-back and level-headed than many of his kin. He possesses a calm and composed demeanor, often serving as a voice of reason and a mediator within his division. Unlike the typical Yato who revels in battle, Abuto treasures his own kind and deeply dislikes conflict between members of the Yato tribe. This principle guides many of his actions, as he sees infighting as pointless and destructive. He views life through a lens of decisions and consequences, believing one must stand by their own choices. Despite his gruff exterior, he has a gentle and protective side, particularly towards younger individuals and his allies, and can be surprisingly merciful towards enemies.

Abuto's primary motivation is his deep-seated loyalty to his people and his captain, Kamui. He is fiercely proud of his Yato heritage but is driven by a desire to protect the tribe from self-destructive internal strife. He acts as a steadying influence on the bloodthirsty and ambitious Kamui, whom he supports as a loyal right-hand man and an older brother figure. He often finds himself exasperated by Kamui's reckless behavior but remains unwaveringly devoted to guiding and protecting him.

His role in the story is largely defined by his position as the second-in-command of the Harusame's seventh division. Abuto first appears during the Yoshiwara in Flames arc, where he and Kamui become involved in the conflict with the powerful Yato elder, Housen. When a fight breaks out between Kamui and Housen, Abuto attempts to intervene and stop the clash between two of his fellow Yato. As a result, Housen severs his left arm, an injury that leaves him using a prosthetic. Later in the same arc, he battles Kagura and Shinpachi Shimura. His reluctance to seriously harm another Yato, even an enemy, leads to his defeat when Kagura’s latent Yato power is unleashed.

Following Housen's death, Abuto believes he should be punished for his perceived failures, but Kamui instead orders him to continue serving as his right hand. This cements their partnership. Abuto's role expands in later storylines, including the Shogun Assassination arc and the Rakuyo Decisive Battle arc. In these conflicts, he leads troops into battle, fights alongside figures such as Shinsuke Takasugi, and confronts powerful enemies like the ninja Zenzou Hattori and Gintoki Sakata. He also helps Kamui survive a betrayal by the Harusame elders, retreating with him to space to continue the fight.

The most significant relationship in Abuto's life is with Kamui. He has known Kamui since childhood on the planet Rakuyo and has been a close friend and supporter ever since. Abuto acts as a mentor and a moral compass for the younger Yato, often chiding him for his violent impulses while remaining fiercely loyal and protective. Another notable relationship is with Kagura, Kamui's younger sister. While they are enemies in battle, his respect for his own kind causes him to hesitate when fighting her. He also has a soft spot for cunning and strong-willed women, notably a character named Kada, whom he admits is his type.

Throughout the series, Abuto undergoes subtle but meaningful development. He begins as a capable but relatively minor antagonist. However, his creator became so fond of the character that he rescinded an original plan for him to die in the Yoshiwara arc. From that point, Abuto evolves from a simple soldier into a crucial ally, providing unwavering support and strategic insight to Kamui. His journey highlights a shift from merely following orders to actively protecting his captain and their shared future. Despite his early defeat by Kagura, he later states that he would no longer hesitate in a rematch, showing a hardened resolve.

As a Yato, Abuto possesses incredible natural abilities. His physical strength, speed, agility, durability, and endurance are far beyond human limits. He is a highly skilled and instinctive hand-to-hand combatant, capable of easily overwhelming most opponents. Even after losing his left arm, his combat effectiveness remains formidable with the use of his prosthetic. Like all Yato, his only notable weakness is an extreme vulnerability to sunlight, which forces him to carry a protective umbrella. His resilience is immense, as he has survived numerous deadly battles that would have killed most others.
