Description
Kouka is a member of the Yato Tribe, a clan of immensely powerful warriors. She was the sole survivor of her lineage on the planet Kouan, having been transformed by the planet’s Altana energy into an immortal being. For centuries, she lived in complete solitude on that desolate world, serving as the caretaker of its dead until the arrival of Umibouzu, a legendary Yato warrior. The planet’s Altana had taken the form of a many-headed serpent called Orochi, which was emotionally linked to her and acted as a guardian. Umibouzu fought the Orochi for twelve days and, in the process, befriended and ultimately fell in love with Kouka. Together they calmed the creature and left Kouan to build a life on the planet Rakuyou. Though she possessed god-like power and eternal life while connected to Kouan, she knowingly abandoned her immortality to become a wife and mother.
Kouka’s personality was initially distant and guarded, a consequence of her millennia of isolation, but she later showed herself to be fiercely loving and deeply protective of her family. She commanded a calm but unquestionable authority, and even the mighty Umibouzu feared her wrath. Her motivation was a simple desire for a warm family, which she prioritized above her own existence. She gave birth to a son, Kamui, and a daughter, Kagura. After Kagura’s birth, however, her body began to fail due to the absence of Kouan’s Altana. She grew progressively weaker, coughing up blood, and was slowly dying. Umibouzu sought to sustain her by bringing crystalline fragments of Altana from her homeworld, but those were only a temporary measure.
The tragedy of her illness shaped the entire course of her family’s story. When the young Kamui learned that his mother had been immortal and that his father’s decision to take her away was the cause of her decline, he blamed Umibouzu entirely. In a fit of rage, Kamui attacked his father, severing Umibouzu’s arm and causing a precious Altana crystal to be lost, which sealed Kouka’s fate. She passed away before the main timeline of the series, and her death defined the fractured relationships that followed: Kamui’s descent into fury and his quest for absolute strength, Kagura’s decision to leave Rakuyou for Earth, and the estrangement between father and children. Within the story, Kouka appears only in flashbacks, yet she is the emotional anchor for the entire Yato family arc. Her memory lives on through Kagura, who inherited her red hair, blue eyes, and parasol, and through Kamui, who in moments of clarity saw his mother’s image reflected in his sister.
Although she never directly participates in combat during the story, her abilities are considered monumental. As a pure-blooded Yato, she possessed immense physical strength and resilience. Her true power stemmed from being an Altana mutant: while on Kouan she was functionally immortal and could not be killed, her body drawing infinite vitality from the planet itself. She is often described in the context of the series as one of its most exceptionally powerful beings, on a scale comparable only to other Altana-born immortals. Kouka’s legacy is not one of personal growth shown on screen, but of a profound sacrifice made before the story begins: giving up eternal life in exchange for a mortal, family-bound existence, a decision that ultimately set every major conflict of her children into motion.
