Description
Hishiyasu Shido is a minor character from the Japanese manga series Blade of the Immortal, making his sole appearance in the very first issue of the story, which establishes the central conflict for the protagonist Manji. He is introduced as the deputy head of a rogue samurai gang known as the Shinsengumi and is the younger brother of Johnny Gyobutsu, a bounty hunter who posed as a priest. Following his brother's death at Manji's hands, Shido steps forward as an antagonist driven by a desire to avenge this loss.
In terms of personality, Shido appears calculating and vengeful, but also impulsive and prone to underestimating his opponents. His primary motivation is to seek revenge against Manji for the death of his brother. To force a confrontation, Shido kidnaps a young woman named Machi, who is Manji's sister. He arrives with approximately twenty men and proposes that Manji fight his entire gang one by one in exchange for Machi's release. When Manji seems reluctant and offers to fight with his bare hands, Shido becomes angered by what he perceives as a lack of seriousness. In a cruel and deceptive act, he releases Machi only to slash her viciously from behind as she runs away.
This role in the story is tragically brief but pivotal. His act of killing Machi triggers a profound and immediate response from Manji, who rushes to the dying girl's side. Seeing an opportunity, Shido stabs Manji in the back with his weapon, only to be shocked that his target does not fall. Manji, revealing his supernatural resilience, then turns on Shido and his entire gang. Shido is swiftly and brutally cut down by Manji, meeting his end alongside his men in that very skirmish.
Regarding key relationships, his bond with his brother Johnny is the defining connection that sets him on his path, though the brothers are not seen interacting directly within the narrative. He also has no direct relationship with the later main protagonist, Rin Asano, as his story concludes before hers begins. Character development is minimal for Shido, as his appearance is limited to this single encounter. He serves primarily as a catalyst for the story's early tragedy and for showcasing the protagonist's immortality and lethal skill, with his death marking the moment Manji inherits a new signature weapon.
His most notable ability is his proficiency with a unique pair of pronged jitte-like blades, which share his name: Shido. These weapons are attached to each other by a long chain, allowing for flexible and unpredictable attacks. He also demonstrates good movement and impressive aiming skill, as he is able to precisely cut Machi into specific shapes even while she is running away from him. Despite this skill, he is ultimately no match for Manji, who dismembers him without allowing him to properly react or even count the blows. Following this fight, Manji takes Shido's distinctive bladed weapons for his own use, and they become a frequently utilized tool in his arsenal throughout the rest of the series.
