Description
Higa is a character from the manga Blade of the Immortal, who does not appear in the anime adaptation. He is a fighter belonging to the Ittō-ryū, a powerful and renegade sword school, and is known for his keen intelligence and deep fascination with the nature of immortality.

Within his own group, which includes fellow Ittō-ryū warriors Uruma and Hanada, Higa is notably detached and observant. He rarely speaks to his partners and prefers to let them engage in combat first, demonstrating a calculating and patient personality. This intelligence is evident when he deduces from details like Manji’s legwear that the ronin is in a hurry and is likely the man pursuing their group for a pass.

Higa’s primary motivation throughout his appearance is his obsession with Manji’s curse of immortality. He is so determined to understand and claim this power for himself that he willingly disregards the Ittō-ryū’s rules of one-on-one combat, allowing his allies to break the code just so he can witness Manji’s abilities firsthand. His desire to obtain eternal life is extreme and visceral; he explicitly states that he would carve out Manji’s heart and eat it, drink his blood, and consume his brains and intestines if necessary to steal the secret of his regeneration.

In the story, Higa serves as a significant and deadly adversary during the Gathering arc. After Uruma and Hanada have worn Manji down, Higa confronts the battered ronin. He discards his own pass to encourage Manji to fight without holding back, and in the ensuing battle, he defeats the already-exhausted Manji, though at the cost of his own arm. His role in the narrative is to be a relentless force of nature, pushing the hero to his absolute limit.

Key relationships define his short but impactful arc. While he works alongside Uruma and Hanada, he holds no apparent loyalty to them, using their fights as data for his own research. His true conflict is with Manji, who represents the object of his obsession. He also clashes with Manji’s allies, Hyakurin and Shinriji. After being struck by Hyakurin’s poison arrows, Higa demonstrates terrifying tenacity by turning his attention to killing her, forcing Shinriji to intervene.

Higa undergoes little traditional development, as his role is defined by a singular, monstrous determination. However, his physical state deteriorates rapidly while his will remains unbroken. Even after losing his initial arm to Manji, suffering multiple poison arrow wounds, and having his remaining arm severed by Shinriji, Higa still attempts to kill Hyakurin by trying to bite her throat out, an act that finally leads to his beheading by Shinriji.

His notable abilities, while formidable, are difficult to fully gauge because he primarily fights an already severely wounded Manji. However, he is a master swordsman who wields a distinctive Southeast Asian blade named Kamujin, which translates to Godblade. His most remarkable trait is his extreme endurance and willpower. He continues to function and fight aggressively while suffering from grievous injuries, including multiple amputations and the paralyzing effects of poison, showcasing a superhuman level of resilience.
