Description
Ki Sui, also known as Ji Hui, is a general of the Zhao military and the lord of the city of Rigan. He is a man in his mid-thirties to forties with long, slicked-back brown hair, a thinly worn mustache and beard, and is typically seen wearing a white cape over his soldier's armor. His entire life and identity are deeply rooted in his homeland, the city of Rigan.

Ki Sui's personality is defined by an overwhelming and profound love for his hometown and its people. This devotion is the core of his character, serving as the primary inspiration for his soldiers, who are known to fight with doubled strength and unwavering resolve in his presence. He is portrayed as a kind and just ruler, a stark contrast to many other lords of the era, who cares deeply for the well-being of his citizens. This deep bond extends to his adopted brothers, Ba Tei and the late Ryuu Tou, with whom he was raised by his father, Ki Shou, the former lord of Rigan. The three share a powerful fraternal connection forged through shared hardship and training from a young age.

The driving force behind Ki Sui's actions is the memory of a traumatic event known as the Tragedy of Rigan. When he was twenty years old, his father and his followers were captured and burned alive by an invading army from the neighboring city of Anka. Young Ki Sui was forced to watch as his father perished, with his last words commanding Ki Sui to keep the children of Rigan safe. This horrific experience, which caused him to weep blood instead of tears, shaped his entire being and instilled in him a fierce, protective dedication to his city and a determination to prevent such a tragedy from ever happening again. His motivation in any conflict is ultimately tied to the defense of Rigan, and he is willing to abandon strategic positions or make difficult decisions to ensure its safety.

Within the story, Ki Sui serves as a formidable opponent to the Qin invasion forces, particularly during the Koku You Campaign and the Western Zhao Invasion arc. He initially leads his army, the Ki Sui Army, alongside the forces of the Zhao general Kei Sha to defend the Kokuyou Hills region. After Kei Sha is slain, Ki Sui demonstrates quick thinking by concealing the death to maintain morale and continues to fight, but he is ultimately forced to withdraw from the battlefield to protect Rigan from the brutal tactics of the Qin general Kan Ki. His fear of Kan Ki's cruelty, and the threat it poses to his home, proves more powerful than any military objective, showcasing his singular priority. Later, during the Battle of Shukai Plains, he serves as a right-wing commander in Ri Boku's army, engaging in a prolonged and complex stalemate against Qin commanders like Mou Ten and the Hi Shin Unit.

Ki Sui's development is not one of dramatic personal change but rather a deepening of his established nature. He enters the story as a capable but untested lord protecting a peaceful city and evolves into a seasoned general forced to navigate the brutal realities of a full-scale war between states. Through each trial, including the death of his brother Ryuu Tou, his resolve to protect what remains of his family and his people only strengthens. He successfully leads his army to survive several major campaigns, ultimately retreating to guide refugees to safety after the fall of the city of Gyou, proving his commitment to protecting the innocent above all else.

Ki Sui is recognized as an immensely talented military commander, and it is suggested by other characters that, were it not for the psychological trauma of his past, he could have become one of Zhao's Great Generals. His abilities are well-rounded. As a leader, his charisma is his greatest asset, capable of rallying his men to fight with almost supernatural fervor simply by his presence on the front lines. He is also a capable strategist and tactician, showing sharp intuition and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure, such as when he sensed an ambush or restructured his command after the loss of its leader. In personal combat, Ki Sui is highly proficient, skilled in using both a glaive and a sword. He demonstrated this prowess in his youth by fighting through a numerically superior force to slay an enemy lord in a single strike, and on later battlefields, he has proven strong enough to block a heavy blow from the physically powerful Zenou, though such feats come at a cost. The soldiers of his Ki Sui Army are also considered some of the finest in Zhao, with an elite cavalry unit renowned for its ability to traverse incredibly difficult, vertical terrain to strike at enemy weak points.
