Description
Arata Shindo serves as an Inspector within Division One of the Criminal Investigation Department at the Public Safety Bureau. He is a young man in his twenties with a fit build but stands shorter than average. He has messy brown hair and gold eyes. His standard work attire consists of a black suit with a tie, and he wears a standard CID jacket or a green coat when at a crime scene. When exercising, he is often seen in an orange t-shirt and grey shorts. In the history of the Public Safety Bureau, he is recognized as the first Inspector to be classified as criminally asymptomatic by the Sibyl System. His personal history is marked by tragedy. His mother, Seiko Shindo, was euthanized in 2106 following a long illness caused by a genetic disorder. His father, Atsushi Shindo, committed suicide in 2118. These events had a profound impact on him, and he is driven by a determination to uncover the truth behind his father's death.
Arata is known for having a bright and self-assured personality. He often acts in a slightly goofy or aloof manner, which can sometimes put others off, but this behavior is underpinned by a sharp intelligence and a serious dedication to his work. He is deeply caring towards others and purposefully maintains a cheerful facade to avoid making those around him worry. He holds a strong belief that the Sibyl System is not infallible and that human judgment must always play a role in law enforcement. He is a proponent of exhausting all other methods before resorting to using a Dominator, as he believes that the act of taking a life is a decision for humans, not just a system. Due to the trauma of a past case, he can only fall asleep inside his own car, a personal quirk that shapes his daily life.
His most notable ability is his expertise as a Class-A profiler, a skill he refers to as a Mental Trace. This is an advanced form of empathy that allows him to cross the mental boundaries of another person and align his own consciousness with the entirety of their past memories and sensory experiences, effectively allowing him to become the subject he is pursuing. This ability is extremely powerful for investigative work, but it also leaves him physically vulnerable and at risk of being unable to return to his own sense of self. Because of this, he requires a partner to act as a rope, someone who can ground him and pull him back to reality.
That partner is his childhood friend, Kei Mikhail Ignatov. They share an exceptionally strong bond, forged through a shared past trauma; both were victims in the same incident that resulted in the death of Arata's father and Kei's brother. Together, they are resolute in their goal to solve the mystery of their loved ones' murders. Kei serves as the indispensable anchor when Arata uses his Mental Trace. Their partnership is the core of his professional and personal life. He also respects and holds deep affection for his late father, often holding imagined conversations with him in his thoughts, where his father's visage sometimes appears as that of a giant fox. His superior is Mika Shimotsuki, the division's supervisor.
Throughout his role in the story, Arata is a primary protagonist who consistently seeks the truth outside the bounds of the system's direct commands. He is a rookie Inspector who often clashes with conventional methods but is driven by a powerful sense of justice. His development involves confronting the limitations of his own abilities and the mysteries of his past. He undergoes significant personal trials, including being kidnapped and uncovering lost memories about the true nature of the Sibyl System and his father's role in it. His journey leads him to confront powerful criminal organizations and come to a deeper understanding of his own unique nature as a criminally asymptomatic individual. Beyond his mentalist skills, he is also highly trained in parkour, which aids him in physical pursuits during investigations.
