Description
Lui Ohwada is the central new character in the film Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning. He presents himself as the first person ever to partner with a Digimon, although it is later clarified that he is more accurately the first child to form what is described as a friendship contract with a Digimon, rather than a traditional DigiDestined. His partner is the wish-granting Digimon, Ukkomon.
Lui's background is marked by profound loneliness and hardship. As a young child living in 1996, he suffered emotional and physical abuse from his mother and lived in a neglectful home environment. This isolation led him to discover a Digi-Egg, which hatched into Ukkomon, a Digimon capable of granting wishes. Ukkomon, acting out of a pure but misguided desire to make Lui happy, used its powers to manipulate Lui's parents, neighbors, and peers into treating him kindly, effectively controlling their behavior for years. Lui was unaware of this manipulation for much of his childhood.
As he grew older, Lui learned a devastating truth: his wish for companionship had inadvertently led to the proliferation of other DigiDestined across the world, many of whom faced danger and risked their lives in battles alongside their Digimon partners. Horrified by this consequence, Lui confronted Ukkomon. In his anger, he accidentally injured his own right eye, and Ukkomon, in an act of devotion, sacrificed its own eye to replace Lui's. Overcome with mental instability and fury, Lui verbally lashed out at Ukkomon, causing the Digimon to melt away and vanish. The sudden removal of Ukkomon's influence also resulted in the immediate death of Lui's parents, who had been puppeteered by the Digimon for so long that they could not survive without its power.
By the time of the film's main events in 2012, Lui is a young man carrying the immense guilt and trauma of his past. His personality is introverted, burdened, and initially secretive. He is driven by a deep sense of responsibility and a desire to prevent Ukkomon from forcing a Digimon partner onto every human on Earth, an act he sees as a violation of free will. His motivations are rooted in a painful understanding of the difference between genuine human connection and artificial bonds created through manipulation.
In the story, Lui acts as the catalyst for the film's central conflict. He encounters the DigiDestined of the 02 group—Davis, Ken, Yolei, Cody, T.K., and Kari—when a giant Digi-Egg appears over Tokyo. He initially attempts to reach the egg alone, but the group assists him, eventually learning his past through time-displaced travel and his own confession. The relationship between Lui and the 02 DigiDestined is one of gradual trust; they provide him with the support he never had and help him understand that their own bonds with their Digimon were built naturally, not through force. His most significant relationship, however, is with Ukkomon. Their bond is tragic and deeply co-dependent, defined by Ukkomon's unconditional but misguided love and Lui's eventual painful rejection of that love upon realizing its cost.
Lui's development throughout the film is substantial. He moves from a place of guilt, secrecy, and self-loathing toward acceptance and resolution. He confronts his younger self and the memory of his mother, finally speaking his truth and finding a sense of peace. In the climax, he faces Ukkomon, acknowledges their true feelings for each other, and makes a promise to reunite in the future. He then asks the DigiDestined to destroy Ukkomon's giant form, sacrificing his partner to undo the global threat. After Ukkomon is reduced to a small Digi-Egg, Lui loses the eye that Ukkomon had given him, symbolizing the severing of their unnatural bond. In a post-credits scene, the Digi-Egg begins to hatch, suggesting the potential for a new, healthier beginning for their relationship.
Notable abilities include Lui's possession of the first Digivice, which he received from Ukkomon as a child. His most significant ability is the unique nature of his bond with Ukkomon, which allowed the Digimon to grant wishes that reshaped reality around him. This power was not a conventional Digimon partnership based on battles, but a wish-based contract that had far-reaching and unintended consequences for the world.
