Description
Kimihiko Kimizuka is the central protagonist of the story, an 18-year-old high school student whose life has been defined by an unusual and often dangerous pattern of attracting trouble. He claims to have been born with a condition that naturally draws him into chaotic and hazardous situations, a tendency that has led to him accidentally stumbling upon criminal activities, being present at crime scenes so frequently that authorities became suspicious, and even getting kidnapped and forced onto an international flight. This incident on a hijacked airplane is where he first met Siesta, a beautiful and eccentric young woman who declared herself a legendary detective and forcibly recruited him to be her sidekick in order to stop the hijackers.
Despite his initial reluctance, Kimihiko agreed to work with Siesta, and for the next three years, they traveled the world together, solving countless cases and combating a shadowy organization known as SPES. This partnership came to a tragic and abrupt end with Siesta’s death, an event that had a profound impact on Kimihiko, leaving him cold, apathetic, and simply going through the motions of daily life. In an attempt to return to a normal existence, he resolves to live a lethargic and uneventful life as a high school senior, but his past and his unique abilities continue to pull him back into the world of mystery and danger.
Kimihiko is characterized by a dry, sardonic sense of humor, often acting as a deadpan snarker in the face of the bizarre events around him. Despite being drawn into peril, he possesses nerves of steel and has learned to keep a cool head and think clearly under pressure. While he professes a desire for a boring life, he is ultimately a reluctant hero, an amateur sleuth who has gained a reputation and skill set that rivals that of a professional detective, even though he rejects the title himself because, as he states, the detective is already dead. His personality also has a more comedic side, as he occasionally shows the reactions of a typical teenage boy, though he tries to hide it, which has led to him being labeled a covert pervert by those close to him.
The most significant relationship in Kimihiko’s life is his bond with Siesta. He served as her apprentice and partner, learning the ropes of detective work through their adventures. The flashbacks to their time together reveal a relationship built on profound mutual trust, with Siesta recognizing his unique potential, a quality she referred to as being the "Singularity," an entity capable of disrupting the plans of SPES. Her death drives much of his initial apathy, but her influence continues to shape his actions. A key figure who brings him back into the fray is Nagisa Natsunagi, a girl who received Siesta’s heart via a transplant and bears a strong resemblance to her. Nagisa seeks out Kimihiko with a request, forging a new partnership that mirrors his old one and giving him a new purpose.
Kimihiko’s abilities are largely intellectual. Through years of training with Siesta, he has acquired remarkable deductive reasoning skills and is capable of awesomeness by analysis, able to observe minute details and solve complex cases much like his former mentor. However, he is strictly a non-action guy; Siesta herself noted he is not suited for combat and has very poor stamina. He functions primarily as a strategist and an action survivor, often finding himself outmatched by the superhuman threats he encounters but using his wits to survive. As the story progresses, his development sees a gradual shift from a reluctant participant burdened by loss to someone who learns to accept his role and rely on new collaborators, valuing the preservation of memories over simple vengeance.
