Description
Araiguma-kun is a raccoon and a central figure among the animal characters, known for being a close friend to the protagonist, Bonobono. His design reflects his species, most notably through the striped pattern on his tail, which distinguishes him from a tanuki. Within the group of three main friends, he is often portrayed as the one with the most common sense and a relatively mature perspective, though this is frequently overshadowed by his quick temper and abrasive behavior. He tends to use polite language, which creates an interesting contrast with his generally irritable and violent actions. One of his defining traits is his short fuse; he is very quick to anger and often resorts to physical violence, particularly against his friend Porori, whom he frequently kicks or beats when annoyed or frustrated. He also frequently scolds Bonobono for the otter’s foolish or overly imaginative thinking.
Despite his aggressive exterior, Araiguma-kun genuinely considers Bonobono and Porori his friends, showing a more complex personality that includes a tsundere-like reluctance to openly express his care. He has a strong dislike for losing to them, which often leads him to bluff or get involved in various accidents, but his underlying loyalty is revealed in moments of crisis, such as when he cried and desperately searched for Bonobono after the otter fell into a hole and went missing. His motivations are often driven by this pride and a desire not to appear weak or inferior, which gets him into trouble as frequently as his violent outbursts.
His role in the story is primarily as a foil to the more naive and gentle Bonobono and the timid Porori. He serves as the source of much of the series' conflict and physical comedy, often through his explosive reactions and self-inflicted misfortunes. In earlier adaptations, his personality was markedly more violent and stubborn. Over time, however, his character has softened. In the 2016 anime, while he still exhibits a violent streak, he shows a greater tendency to resolve issues through dialogue, having transformed from a purely violent personality into a softer, more gentle adult figure. He is also shown to have a nostalgic and caring side, as seen when he raised a small green caterpillar named Uma-chan, and continues to fondly remember the experience.
Araiguma-kun lives with his father, a relationship that is complex and often difficult. His father is also violent and is implied to have raised Araiguma-kun with harsh beatings, making him a source of both fear and respect. Although they fight often, their relationship is not entirely bad, with Araiguma-kun respecting his father in his own way. His mother is currently traveling, having left when he was young, which has led to an awkwardness between them. Unlike Porori, who has a large family, Araiguma-kun has many friends throughout the forest, appearing to know someone almost everywhere he goes. One of his notable abilities is his immense physical strength; he is powerful enough to lift four animals at once. He also possesses a comedic form of invincibility or immortality, surviving falls from great heights, being struck by meteor fragments, and prolonged submersion under ice without any lasting harm. In one instance, a blow to the head from a failed bungee jump caused him to lose his violent personality entirely, transforming him into a docile, flower-arranging character who politely played house, until his friends pushed him off a cliff to restore his memory.
