Description
Koro-sensei is the homeroom teacher of Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School. He was once a human assassin known as the Reaper or God of Death, born into poverty and trained from a young age in lethal techniques. After undergoing antimatter experimentation by Kotaro Yanagisawa, he transformed into a yellow, octopuslike creature with tentacles, gaining extraordinary powers. The process was tied to the death of Aguri Yukimura, a woman who inspired him to abandon his assassin life and dedicate himself to teaching. As part of an arrangement with the government, he agreed to teach Class 3-E for one year until graduation, at which point the students must assassinate him or he will destroy Earth.
His personality is a blend of lighthearted playfulness and profound wisdom. He often displays a whimsical, mischievous side and shifts rapidly between moods, with his skin color changing involuntarily to reflect his emotions—yellow for neutrality, bright orange for correct answers, dark purple for mistakes, green for arrogance, and black for extreme rage. Despite his immense power and alien appearance, he is empathetic, patient, and genuinely invested in the growth of every student. He uses unorthodox methods, such as combining academic lessons with assassination training, to build confidence, critical thinking, and teamwork in a class that has been marginalized and written off by the school system.
His primary motivation is to help his students surpass their own limits and achieve their potential, serving as both a mentor and a target. He seeks redemption for his violent past by ensuring that his students develop into capable, responsible individuals. His role in the story is that of a catalyst: he provides the challenge—assassinate him before graduation—that forces the class to grow academically, physically, and emotionally. At the same time, he protects them from external threats and treats them as equals, fostering mutual respect and trust.
Key relationships include his bond with Nagisa Shiota, who becomes the class’s strategic leader and documents Koro-sensei’s many weaknesses. Kayano Kaede’s personal history is directly connected to his past, adding emotional depth to their interactions. The entire Class 3-E functions as a collective family under his guidance, with each student receiving individual attention and encouragement.
Over the course of the story, Koro-sensei evolves from an enigmatic, almost monstrous figure into a deeply caring and respected teacher. His past is gradually revealed, showing the tragedy that led to his transformation and his genuine desire to make amends. His development culminates in his ultimate sacrifice during the graduation ceremony, where he willingly lets his students kill him, solidifying his legacy as a teacher who gave everything for their future.
His notable abilities include the capacity to move at Mach 20, near-instantaneous regeneration, telekinesis, and superhuman intellect that allows him to master every subject he teaches. He can molt his outer skin once a month, creating a protective barrier, and enter an Absolute Defense Form in which his body compresses into an indestructible crystal sphere for 24 hours. His skin color shifts serve as an emotional barometer, and his black state signals a lethal, no-mercy mode triggered when his students are in extreme danger. Despite these powers, he has a long list of documented weaknesses, including motion sickness, an inability to swim, vulnerability after molting or regeneration, a tendency to panic easily, and distractions from sweets, gossip, or certain physical features. These flaws make him both formidable and approachable, reinforcing the central theme that even the strongest being has vulnerabilities that can be overcome through observation, teamwork, and growth.
