Description
Nagisa Shiota is the main human protagonist and narrator of the story. He is a student in Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School, the class seat number eleven. He has pale skin, long shoulder-length light blue hair, and blue eyes. He is the shortest boy in his class and has a slim build with androgynous features that sometimes cause confusion about his gender. He is about fourteen to fifteen years old during the main events.

Nagisa comes from a difficult home background. His father is chronically absent from the family, and his mother, Hiromi Shiota, is strict and emotionally abusive. She tries to live vicariously through Nagisa by forcing him to follow her exact life plan for him, because she experienced failure in her own life and was never allowed to look like a pretty girl by her parents. She constantly tells him she wishes he had been born a girl and makes him grow his hair long, only allowing him to tie it up. This upbringing forced Nagisa to learn to read the difference between his mother's cheerful and gloomy moods in order to prevent some of her abuse, a skill that later connects to his talent for sensing the wavelengths of consciousness of others, which is a technique used by the world's best assassin, the Reaper.

In personality, Nagisa is calm, collected, and friendly. He is exceptionally observant and circumspect of his surroundings and the situations that develop around him. He is polite to his friends and teachers, and he prefers to avoid conflict whenever possible. However, beneath this congenial exterior lies a darker, more calculating side that becomes most evident during training and assassination missions. When engaged in battle, Nagisa becomes a brutal and focused individual who can throw away his life if it means killing his target. According to Karasuma, when Nagisa unleashes his killing intent, he is not training but truly going for a kill. Nagisa is introspective and often reflects on the moral weight of taking a life, especially as he grows to admire Koro-sensei.

His primary motivation is to fulfill the assassination mission to save the world from destruction, as Koro-sensei will explode on graduation day if not killed. But as he gets to know Koro-sensei as a teacher and mentor, his mission becomes complicated by a deeply personal dilemma. He struggles with the idea of killing someone he has come to respect and care for. Over time, he also realizes that he wants to become a teacher himself, inspired by Koro-sensei's dedication and methods.

Nagisa plays a central role in the story as the student who possesses the greatest natural talent for assassination, though this is not immediately obvious due to his small stature and mediocre physical abilities that are comparable to some of the girls in the class. He is the one who documents Koro-sensei's weaknesses, noting down observations that at first seem minor but are later revealed to be useful in assassination attempts. In the final arc of the story, when the government's plan to use a satellite laser as a last resort puts everyone at risk, Nagisa attempts to find an alternative to killing Koro-sensei, but when the antidote plan fails and Koro-sensei is gravely weakened after saving Kaede Kayano, Nagisa volunteers to deliver the killing blow himself. He stabs Koro-sensei in the heart, ending his life and fulfilling the mission. After graduation, Nagisa's home life improves; he saves his mother from an assassin, which gives him time to realize that his talents can be used to save people, and his mother realizes that she cannot hold onto him forever. Nagisa goes on to become a teacher at Gokuraka Private High School, where he works with a class of delinquents, using the skills and philosophy he learned from Koro-sensei. His relationship with his father also improves, and his parents attend his graduation together.

Key relationships include Koro-sensei, who starts as a target but becomes the most influential mentor in Nagisa's life, shaping his understanding of morality, teaching, and purpose. Tadaomi Karasuma recognizes Nagisa's assassination talents and pushes him to unlock his potential. Kaede Kayano is a close classmate seated next to him; Nagisa kisses her to help her forget her murderous intent when she is under the control of experimental tentacles, which causes her to develop romantic feelings for him. Karma Akabane is a friend and rival whom Nagisa works closely with, especially in the final plan. Nagisa's mother is a complicated and difficult figure in his life, but their relationship improves after he saves her.

Nagisa's notable abilities include an uncanny talent for approaching targets undetected while maintaining an aura of calm and hiding his true intentions. He can make opponents falter through his bloodlust alone. He is exceptionally observant and can read people and situations with great accuracy, which makes him an astute strategist. He is capable of analyzing and documenting Koro-sensei's weaknesses. He develops strong assassination skills through his time in Class 3-E, despite starting with perceived physical limitations. He also learns a killer's finishing move from the professional assassin known as the Reaper. Seven years after graduation, Nagisa is only one centimeter taller than his junior high self, which disappoints him.
